Back problems..caused by large chest?!


Question: When I stand for long periods of time or do alot of strenuous upper body exercise, I get a pain on my left shoulderblade. I can pinpoint the exact spot where it hurts. If you move one inch to the right or left, there is no pain. My mother, who is an LPN, says that it may be a herniated disc in my upper back, which is sending pain to that spot. She has a similar situation with "exact spot pain" caused by a herniated disc in her lower back. She says that it may or may not be caused by the fact that I have rather large breasts, which put extra weight on my back. What is your opinion or advice about my situation?

For your specific problem you must see a doctor. My girlfriend had serious problems with back pain for many years. Rather large breasts and it even hurt to wear a bra. Long story short, she had surgery and breast reduction, a lot, by a plastic surgeon and hasn't had a problem since. That was 15 years ago. Now she not only feels great, she looks great as well. Considered a medical necessity it was covered by insurance. This was not an elective cosmetic procedure.

Your moms more than likely right, your big boobs may really be a problem also.

Go see a chiropractor.

Breast Reduction may be in order

Usually an x-ray can tell if you have a herniated disk. Not always, but most herniated disks will eventually harden off and stop bothering you. I know for sure that very large "weights" on your chest will cause chronic back pain. My best friend had to have a reduction just for that reason. You sound way too young for a reduction. I'd check into a routine to strengthen your back muscles. Sorry, best I can do!

Your mother may be correct with what she is saying, but the only way to be sure is to see a doctor. You may have injured your back some other way and the exercise just aggravates it. It could also be a cervical problem.
Best advice I can give you is to make sure you are wearing a well fitted, supportive bra to decrease any stress on your back and make an appointment to see your doctor. You can also try going to a chiropractor... they do wonders.

DONT do a breast reduction.

I would (1) make sure you are properly fitted for a supportive bra, and (2) see a chiropractor for an evaluation, and (3) do a lifestyle check.

The percentage of women wearing an ill fitting bra are like 90%, or something, so unless you have been fitted by a person who knows what they are doing, and unless you have had that "fit" confirmed regularly, you probably are in that 90%. An ill fitting bra and big breasts is a recipe for upper back pain, for sure.

A good chiropractor will do a gentle evaluation for alignment issues, and if the problem isn't something chiropractic treatment can fix, a good chiropractor will refer you on. I have been to a chiropractor for arthritis in my neck and shoulders. The regular maintenance of spinal alignment helps a lot, as does the massage therapy that is part of my monthly visit.

This problem could be the result of a lot of small life style issues vs. one big thing, like a herniated disc. For instance, given the fact that have have heavy breasts, do you sleep on a bed that gives you sufficient support? Any uneven distribution of body weight will be made worse if it's 24/7, particularly with back pain. A supportive mattress and box springs should be part of the fix, if that's not something you already have. Do you have a desk job? If you don't have an ergonomically correct chair, you can get back pain. I never believed this was important, until I got an Aeron chair. Completely changed my life, immediately! Do you sit in a chair at home a lot? Is that a cheap chair with no back support, or a good chair? Do you carry a heavy purse on the side where you have the pain?

Those three avenues are good, conservative approaches to begin with, and you can always see a medical specialist if these solutions don't improve your condition.

your breasts definalty could be causing the pproblem...one of my friends had extremely large breasts, and she was in constant pain. she got a reduction last year (she was only 16) so i guess even if you are still really young you can have one..but it depends on the size and problems being caused by your breasts. go to the doctor and see if that may be an option for you.
