How much does it hurt to drain blood from the nail?!

Question: Hey, about 5 days ago I dropped a ski boot on my toe and the doctor put me on painkillers for it. It doesn't really throb anymore, but it still is blue full of blood under the nail, and it's extremely sensitive: I can't put a sock on. I want it to be better by New Year's, so I am going to a surgeon to get it drained. How painful is it, and which method is the best? Thanks!

I had to drain a nail because it was full of blood after smashing it. I stuck a needle under my finger nail and did it myself. I expected it to hurt a lot but I didn't even feel it so if a surgeon does it you should be fine.

It doesn't hurt at all. I had this happen to me 5 times, and believe it or not, it doesn't hurt, but it's scary.

I too have had one that hurt and throbbed, all I did was take a needle that I had sterilized go under the nail, picked it and the blood rush out just like a blister, didn't feel anything except relief from the throbbing, so if I can do it, it should be a breeze if a surgeon is doing it...........good luck!!!!!!....

Why don't you drain it yourself, save the money and experience NO pain to boot? Here is what I do...Get a sewing machine needle that you can grasp easily. Sterilize the end with some fire, then pick a spot in the middle of the purple area of your toe. Apply gentle pressure while rapidly twirling the sewing machine needle between your fingers. What you are doing is drilling a small hole through your nail to the "blood pool" underneath your nail. When you breech the nail, blood will flow out relieving the pressure AND the pain. Try it...it works great for me.

visit an urgent care. it will take time to heal and pain is relative. some people are sissies and others can tough it out.
