It's time for me to clean up my act for New Years- drug addiction?!

Question: I've been addicted to painkillers for a few years now, and I truly need to stop. I've gone cold turkey and the withdrawal symptoms are just terrible, so I end up going back on the drug just so I don't feel that much pain. I'm addicted to Vicodin by the way.

My question is two fold. One- will I ever feel normal again after stopping? Two- is there a way to get through the withdrawal symptoms, like a way to make the whole ordeal easier?

Help from former addicts is very very much appreciated.

Also, getting professional help to get off isn't an option. I have to do this alone.

I strongly suggest that you consider getting professional help. There is no earthly reason why you should try to do this alone. There are many others out there who are just like you and there is support available. Those of us who have drug or alcohol problems and have gotten off the crap and stayed clean know that there is safety in numbers...we are each other's safety net.

Either sign yourself into a treatment facility or get off your butt, pick up the phone and call your local branch of Narcotics Anonymous (they, like AA, are in every phone book).

Quitting alcohol or drugs is not easy. There is NOTHING easy about it. It will be one of the hardest things you will ever have to do. Do you want me to sugarcoat it? That is just not possible. I learned that the hard way. You should not try to do this alone. Get help...it's available. There is no cost for NA. There are meetings at all times of the day and night.

Yes, if you mange to get clean and stay that way, you will eventually feel "normal" again. However, you will need to accept that, clean or not, you will ALWAYS be an addict. Forever. Also, you have to realize that it takes time...a lot of it...staying clean is a lifelong process.

How do I know this? Easy...I'm an alcoholic. I went into a treatment program and then to AA more than 15 years ago. You know what? This coming April, I will celebrate 16 years sobriety. You know something else? I'm still an alcoholic. I always will be...but I'm a SOBER alcoholic.

I hope you find your way.

Are you more concerned with "blowing your cover" with your family than you are with getting clean? I advise you to rethink what you said...you are going to realize very quickly that you will need their help.

You can't do NA over the phone...you need to physically go to the meetings. Otherwise, it won't work for you.

First off, good for you! I think that if you have people surrounding you with support would be good for you. You will feel normal again. I used to pop X on a daily basis (like 5 or more pills sometimes never less than 3) and when I stopped I really don't know if I had withdrawals. I got depressed and sicker. Just stick it out and do activities to keep your mind off drugs. Good luck.

Im not sure that youll ever feel "normal" again but youll feel alot better.

There is a rehab clinic that deals mostly with heroin addicts that has a very effective way of dealing with withdrawl symptoms. They keep the patient sedated while the with drawl symptoms occur, once the worst is over they bring them out and start their therapy. I dont know if this is an option for you but if the withdrawls are that bad you might want to look into it

you will go back to normal after being off it for a while. It is really hard to get off a drug like this. You will have to wean your self off of it to avoid all the withdrawals. The pain you feel is your nerves 'waking up' from being drugged. Once they adapt to not having it you should feel better than you do now, but you will have to be careful because you will always crave it and it will be really easy to get hooked again. You can do it! If you have a setback, dont let it get you down, just start again, and dont be too hard on yourself.
