While I, myself, has not had this done, I have assisted on MANY, MANY, MANY of these surgeries.

A small incision is made. The surgeon gets down to where the disc is bulging out. Removes the bulging portion and makes sure that nothing else is pressing on the nerve. Then he closes the wound with sutures.

Once you are in the recovery room and awake, you will notice that your pain that you had before the surgery is gone. Your nerve is no longer being compressed, so your pain is gone. You may have some pain and soreness because of the incision and surgery itself, but patients say that it is nothing like the pain they had when their nerve was being compressed. Depending on your job, you would most likely be back to near normal activity in about 2 weeks. Everybody is different and has different pain tolerances. The surgeon would also send you home with pain meds if you needed them.

Good luck.
