I have Basilar Migraine, what is it, what can be done?!

Question: I was diagnosed with Basilar Migraine years ago, I still don't know what it is or how to manage it. I also have Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue and Chronic Pain which I am taking morphine for, anybody else have similar problems, if so what do you do for them and how do you occupy your time.

"A Basilar-Type Migraine is a Migraine that has aura symptoms originating from the brainstem and/or affecting both hemispheres of the brain at the same time, but with no motor weakness. The aura of BTM usually lasts less than 60 minutes, but in some cases can be more extended. However, BTM is actually essentially Migraine with aura with the aura localized to the brainstem." Some aura symptoms include problems seeing or hearing, dizziness, ringing in the ears, odd feelings in the limbs etc. It can be quite scary especially if you haven't been diagnosed. Your doctor should have explained all these things to you. For more information you can go to http://www.helpforheadaches.com/articles... I have a similar type of migraine (hemiplegic) where I get weird aura symptoms too (eg paralysis and speech loss). The best thing you can do if you get the migraine headache after the aura is to take a pain killer before the headache gets a grip. I seem to recall that you should never take a Triptan or ergotamine if you have basilar migraines (I know that I reacted badly to both of them in the past). Talk to your doctor for more information about treatments. I just wait out the auras by either lying down or staying somewhere quiet that I won't be interrupted by someone who doesn't understand what's happening to me. I also wear a medicalert bracelet which explains my most common auras so no-one calls an ambulance.

Magnesium can certainly help your basilar migraine and you can find further information in a search for "basilar migraine" + magnesium.
