I think you need to see a chiropractor....you obviously knocked some ribs out of place...and they will hurt until you get it fixed or the nerve becomes numb.

i agree with "mom". you might just need to see a chiro. my husband has a rib that sometimes gets knocked out of place and he complains about the same things that you are complaining about.

With any kind of injury like that you will have fluid rushing in to the area which is known as edema. The build up fluid in the tissue is meant to work as a kind of crude, natural splint, but may push a rib out of place just a hair.

If it is a noticeable displacement and you truly cannot breathe normally then you should return to the ER for another eval.

Bruises themselves can go deep and hurt like hell, and normally for a rib injury a simple wrap is all that is usually required, but if your breathing is compromised you should have looked at again.

Another thing you can do is look in the mirror at the injury site while you breathe. Shirt off ofcourse. As you breathe in and out your chest wall either moves in or out in a uniform motion...does the injured site move in the opposite direction to the rest of the chest wall? Does it move in when the rest of your moves out as you breathe?

If so, you may what is known as 'flail chest' and is caused by a broken segment of ribs. This will require more eval.

I'm not sure if it could be more or not. I had bruised ribs before (from a bear hug a close friend gave me) and it hurt bad and for quite awhile. I couldn't get out of bed normal for weeks! Just when I started feeling better, another close friend (who didn't know and had been out drinking with my then roommate) jumped on me while I was in bed sleeping, just to say "Hi". It felt bad again for awhile longer. I hope for you that that is all it is. If you feel your doc is wrong, it doesn't hurt to get a second opinion.

if he did x rays he would know! and its not in your mind bruised ribs can hurt like hell.. brusing a bone can seem just as painful as if you broke it. if you do not progress follow up with him.
