Insomnia or something??!

Question: Okay..so all my life i've had trouble sleeping, i'm 17 and for the past 4 years I have always stayed up till about 2 am or later even on school/collge nights...
But i've noticed recently like now i'm feeling physically tired and feel lazy....but i've been lying in bed for the past 6 hours, dark, and i cannot get to sleep! this happens alot and usually when I am doing something in the morning, like job interview today!
I really want it to stop, I want to go to bed like everyone else, get a decent 8-12 hours sleep not stay up so late and getting around 4 hours IF THAT.
The reason I wanna stop now is because this has probably screwed me getting a job as I look like a zombie at the moment, and i don't get how I feel tired, lay in bed in darkness, and don't fall asleep, I also have terrible panda eyes haha..

Anyway tips on what to do :\

Change your sleep pattern over a short period of time.
If you watch tv late, record the programs you like and watch them another time.
Have a warm bath or shower a half an hour before bed.
Don't eat for at least two hours before bed.
Make sure the room is totally dark.
Run a fan in the room to drown out any other outside noises that might be keeping you awake, the droning sound often sends you to sleep.
Turn your telephone and computer off.
Read a little easy stuff but nothing that will get your brain going
Have some hot cocoa or milk and honey and sip it just before bedtime.
Get an extra pillow and snuggle into it
I don't know anyone who can sleep through the night before an interview, a wedding, a dentists appointment, a doctors appointment, the inlaws coming over, a first date or first day at a new school or college.
Get a physical, your lack of sleep has caught up with you no doubt but to be safe get yourself checked out.
Even if you don't sleep the night before a doctors appointment... at least you'll know it's nothing physical.

Each night over a couple of weeks go to bed 10-15 minutes earlier each night.

Stay away from doing anything energetic before sleep,

Try an over-the-counter sleep aid like Tylenol PM. Make sure that you are not watching television too late. Turn off the TV and remove it from your bedroom if you have one in there. A nice warm shower might help you to relax before bedtime. Talk to doctor if you can not get to sleep after trying a few things, there may be underlying health issues.

Set up a sleep time routine.
-go to sleep & wake up same time every day of week. ie: midnight to 7 or 7:30 AM.
-Don't do anything stimulating before bedtime. No exercises, no computer, etc.
-Eat a small snack that contains carbohydrates. Being hungry can keep you up. Small sandwich, crackers etc.
-Make sure temperature in room is a bit cool.
-Make room as dark as possible.
-Use your bed only for sleep & intimacy.
-If you can't fall asleep, get out of bed after 20 minutes. Try to read something boring.
-Do same if you are asleep & wake up.
-If you wake up several times, don't look at time...it will make it harder to fall back to sleep.
-Bedtime routine...same every nite ie: brush teeth, watch TV, get undressed, etc.
-Try deep diaphramic breathing.
