I fractured my ankle. Will I need a cast?!

Question: I hurt my ankle 2 weeks ago playing soccer, and today I went to the doctor to see what was wrong. After taking an xray, he said that I fractured it. It was the fibula. I'm going to see an orthopedic doctor tomorrow. Do you think I will need a cast?

Possibly it depends where and how bad the fracture is. They might put you in a cast or they might give you a boot to wear. EIther way you will need some kind of support and to take it easy til it heals.

Edit: To the person below, the fibula is part of the ankle joint (which is also made up of tibia and trochlear surface of the talus) so she is quite correct that its her ankle.

Yes, it maybe a hard cast or a soft one.

you waited to long. i broke my foot and waited 2 weeks to see a doc. and i had a cast 4 2months a boot 4 2months and i had to wear tennis shoes all summer.

probably.would u rather permanently damage ur foot for life or wear a cast for a month or two?

yeah
probably.
sorry! CASTS STINK!

A friend of mine fractured one of her shin bones (I dont know which one) but she didn't wear a cast. Of course she had to stop dancing for a while though.

most likely yes depends on how severe it is they might just wrap it with ace bandage

Yes. You will.
Also: The fibula is a leg bone therefore you fractured (broke) your leg,

The Doctor will be able to tell you, but I can tell you this: if your Doctor does not recommend a cast, do take it easy on that ankle for some time. I fractured my leg (at the front of the lower leg), and years later, it still hurts sometimes. Looking back, my Doctors now tell me that since I did not have a cast, I likely was not careful about injuring my leg further. I should have taken it easy for the next month instead of the multi-mile walks that were a regular thing for me at that time. I probably jumped up and down on it, went hiking, and maybe even dancing at that time; if I hadn't, it would have healed better and I wouldn't have the tenderness I still do sometimes now. Best of luck to you!

Yes , you will need to use a cast for sure.

I am an orthopedic surgeon/you surely need a cast for at least one month
