I have made a committment to stop smoking for the new year. How do I do this?!

Question: So far I stopped smoking since January 1st. I don't seem to get cravings only when I get in my car to go somewhere or when I get really stressed. I would smoke about 3 cigarettes everyday except when I use to drink, it was more like a whole pack. I just want to know if anyone one else has quit or is trying to quit.. I am doing this for my kids but I never thought it would be so hard to quit cold turkey. Any support or advice out there is appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Cocoa....
You sound much younger than me (63) but let me tell you keep trying...I have been trying to quit since Christmas Eve...I started Chantix (this time).....You don't seem to be a heavy smoker so you should be able to do it with a strong commitimement. The very most important thing is you sound like you want to. And your kids are a "super" reason!!!!!
I am doing it for me.......but for my little Grandaughters also-----when I keep them I am always struggling with myself to get to the back porch for a smoke. And the oldest (3) has been saying "stop smoking please Nanna".......................
But you dear sound like you can do it!!!!!!
Get a straw and smoke it......
When you think of smoking --do something physical...
Find something to do with your hands---even if it's play with a rubber band---be creative here.
Sadly going out for drinks is a very hard time--been ther done that!!!!!!
Maybe (until you get a strong quit) you should avoid this situation????
I am still smoking 4 a day----but the last one is in the pack right now........"Hopefully" that is the last one forever!!!!!!!!
One thing is keep coming to this site and read read read---these people are so supportive and they have some great ideas.....
I didn't think about quiting when I was at your stage-----so you are leaps and bounds to on your way..
Come here read------great ideas!!!!
Good Luck and God Bless
You can do it one day at a time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't understand how smoking is so addicting, just stop smoking.

Because you make such a big deal out of quitting, such as how long you've managed without smoking, what the cravings are like, etc, then you always keep it in your mind and it becomes too overwhelming.
Just act like a non-smoker. Don't tell anyone about quitting, just act like you never smoked and smoking was never part of your life. It makes a big difference.
Cold turkey is hard, but it's the most effective way. The other stop smoking 'aids' just tease you until you give in.
Have the balls to do it for your kids. You won't regret it.

One thing that I would suggest with your car is to get it and interior detail job or have everything shampooed to remove the smoke smell. As a smoker I am sure that you know how the smell can seep into everything, this especially happens if you use to smoke in your car and is probably part of the reason why it is more difficult in there.

Start chewing gum or carrying some kind of healthy snack around with you. Sometimes the problem with quiting is that you get use to having something in your mouth even more that the addiction to the nicotine, doing these things can get around that.

GOOD LUCK!!

I know it's difficult. The way I quit cold turkey was that I asked my self one day,"What the heck am I doing blowing smoke into the air for no reason?" Besides, I calculated the cost per year, and was shocked! I smoked Marlboro, which today costs $30.00 a carton or $3.25 a pack. At a carton per week, that's $1500.00!!!!

If you saved that money, you could have a great Christmas this year. Think about it.

Good Luck

Well, my new year resolution, was to stop smoking and drinking.
However, at home alone I think what ells should I do.
If you have some one you care about, this is a reason.
If you are a sad person, it is harder.
I could stop, both, but what ells do I do, have lost the only one that meant any thing to me.
You have family, so do it for them!
You have a life, enjoy it?
