It could be many things the first thing that comes to mind is carpal tunnel syndrome, which can be harmful if you do not get it taken care of in a reasonable time. I mean it can make you disabled and if it gets too bad may effect your job.
The next thing that I think of is diabetes, one of my friends with diabetes says that when her levels get too high or low her hands fall asleep and it takes her awhile and she needs meds to fix the problem. I'm not really educated on diabetes so with that answer I am just going off of what others have told me. That is also something that you would definately want to have checked out though.
The last thing is kinda odd but something that someone else suggested, if your resting, or working, or laying with your hands at a funky position that may cause your blood flow to your hands to be cut off it could make your hands go to sleep. Normally when your hands go to sleep though, it gets to that pin and needles feeling and then will begin to get better, so the chances of it being your hands just falling asleep is very unlikely. What ever it may be I would be setting up an appointment with your Dr. as soon as you can just to be on the safe side. I know that when it comes to your hands, we use them for everything and if this is happening just all of a sudden don't put your hands at risk. Get in to your Dr. and make sure that you ask for every test humanly possible that would cause this and that way your not going in for 10 different tests on 10 different days due to the Dr. thinking that it may be this, or it may be that, just get tested for all the may be's and that way you know that you've covered all of your bases and hopefully instead of all of those long waiting periods you will only have one long waiting period before you find out what it is. Good luck to you and I hope that I was at least a little bit of help.

you are either sitting/standing/laying in a position where you are blocking the blood flow to your hands. (from expirience)

Sounds like it could be from carpal tunnel syndrome. Do you get it in the middle of the night too? And have to "fling" your hands to get them to "wake up"? Do you do a lot of work with your hands, like typing?

Carpal tunnel syndrome, or CTS, is pretty common, and is due to the median nerve getting squished within the tight space within your wrist, and, compounded by repetitive wrist movements, becomes inflamed. That's why you get the pins and needles discomfort.

It's hard to tell from the information given whether it really is CTS are not, but if it is, a safe and effective way of treating it is to use wrist splints that you can buy from any pharmacy. The trick is, though, to wear them as much as possible, and through the night if you can tolerate it.

See your doctor to see whether it really is CTS. Hope that helps - good luck!

Sounds like poor circulation! Could be blood pressure, are you diabetic? Mine do that at night, I wake up and my hands feel like there not even there sometimes...Can be a heart problem; need to get that checked out.
