I cut my hand last night, got 7 stitches, fingers are numb?!

Question: The medical facility called this morning to see how I was, told them my pinky and ring finger were numb. They didn't seem too concerned. The nurse said they would be more concerned about infection right now. I just thought that it was the pain shot they gave me at first. But my fingers still shouldn't be numb, should they? Do you think it's nerve damage or what? Do you think they are doing their job right, or missing something. Thanks.

A DRs and Nurses responsibility to save life and limb first. When ever you have a severe cut, burn, or injury you are at risk for nerve damage. They are correct in saying that they are more concerned about infection at this time. Again, they are more concerned about saving your hand. If and infection were to occur you could be at risk for amputation. They are doing their duty by saving your limb. If the numbness persists after 2-3 days I would then contact they DR and tell him, but the ER is not responsible for loss of feeling.

I think it may be too early to even tell honestly.

Maybe you cut a tendon... therefore you dont feel your fingers

It probably still the medicine that they gave you. Call them again to check up on it though.
Hope this helps!

theyre doctors of course there doing the right thing

Oh I am sorry but I don't know. I hope it is normal.

If the docor thinks it is alright then it must be alright.

it's probably the fact that you have a cut, so you should either feel sore or numbish, i mean you should feel pain. Your body is naturally releasing endorphins, which end pain. Still check it out just in case. hope u feel better!

Its doesn't seem like they did it right at all. Better take out those stitches and sew it up properly.

It is pretty normal for your fingers to still be numb, but you do need to get a md to take a look

It could be nerve damage if it was a deep cut but your doctor would have told you there was a risk for that at your appt.

There may be numbness from swelling around the cut.

You will undoubtedly have swelling, and this is where the numbness comes in.

I sliced a deep groove in my thumb last night and now all the skin and tissue around it is hard and numb, it's just what happens. If you've cut yourself enough for 7 stitches, think where the blood is going and how your hand is healing yourself. Blood is flowing away from the cut and deeper into your skin to allow healing and prevent heavy bleeding.

The nerve endings are in your skin.... they're receiving less blood... so... that's why it's numb.

it depends how deep the cut was
and if it ran along any nerve paths
you should wait a day or two more and if it is still numb
then you should talk to your gp (doctor)
because it may be nerve damage

They are correct. Getting you healed up without an infection is primary and of the utmost importance.

If you do have nerve damage, there is nothing that can be done about that at this point. It is not a surgical issue.

The numbness is common and will last for a while. It will improve slowly. Make sure you are moving your muscles a little bit even now.

It could be a couple of things: the numbing drug they shot your fingers with still hasn't worn off yet or it could be a bit of nerve damage, which may or may not get better with time. I do think they are doing their jobs...infections are number one priority and when you have your follow-up with the doctor mention your numbness to him at that time.

Good Luck!

They had to numb your hand to put the stitches in. It sometimes takes a while for that to wear off. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

ill feel that way for a couple of days then it might hurt for a day or 2. no you its not nerve damage. if you lose a hand i think if you sue you get like 50k

It's not nerve damage. Your body is naturally numbing the area because it know the level of pain is above your threshold. Don't worry, you'll be feeling the pain soon enough, it wears of after a while when your endorphins realize that
a- the pain is going to be constant so your body focuses on other more important issues or
b- the pain has subsided to a level that you can handle without going into shock.

be greatful.....

yes, most likely nerve damage, i have it in my toe from when i broke it a few years ago.. i dont thinks theres much you can do about it, and if there not worried, i doubt you should be.
i suggest getting it looked at after the wound is healed.
hope you get better soon and sorry if this isnt too helpful =/

I do believe the pain medication and possibly small nerve you cut that will probably grow back and all be normal. I am sure they are doing there job correctly. When you have the stitches out if it is still this way I would be concerned and talk to them about it.===

feeling will probably come back soon
