Depending on the type of hernia some can and are quite dangerous, for instance if a loop of bowel gets caught down in a hernia it can cause strangulation of the bowel.
Now having said this, to the best of my knowledge any type of hernia can be fixed surgically.
In order to get a proper diagnosis you must of course visit your health care professional.
A hernia is not self healing as what happens is the muscle and connective tissue comes apart creating an opening which causes a bulge on the outside of the skin.
It must be surgically fixed there is no other alternative.
The bulge is from what ever parts of your insides are pressing on through the opening of the hernia.
Do go see your health care provider, a hernia is not something to fool with.

most hernia's are repairable but some are minor enough that they do not cause a problem

If you suspect hernia, you should have it checked out because it could become strangulated and really cause some bad problems.
