When In Shock Drink Hot Sweet Tea?!

Question: I have heard this before when someone is in shock then the best is to drink hot sweet tea.

But why hot and sweet? Is it because the sweetness boosts the blood sugar levels (common sense is telling me this)?

Thank you

There are many different types of shock.

When treating someone in shock, the safest course of treatment is to avoid giving any liquids. You want to keep the person flat on their backs, where the head down and their legs elevated, unless they have a spinal injury. You should cover them and keep them warm. Because people in shock may become unconscious, giving liquids could choke them or cause them to vomit. Vomiting could cause more damage if they have internal injuries or have swallowed a caustic substance. People in anaphyalatic shock may have swellling to their tongue and throat, making swallowing anything impossible. Sugar is not a good thing to give any person in shock but you do not know their underlying medical problems, such as diabetes. You could cause additional illness due to ingestion of sugar. Liquids should also be avoided because if the person may require emergency surgery. The only reason to give any liquid would have to be if the person was 5 or more hours from any emergency care and giving a liquid will avoid dehydration. If care is 5 or more hours away, a salt solution, such a Gatorade would be ideal to replace electrolytes but if none is available then water is then next best thing. Avoid hot/cold water because the person throat may spasm causing additional problems.

So don't give HOT/SWEET TEA to a person in shock

Good Luck

Generally when people are truly in shock they cannot move and therefore cannot drink anything.

Yeah, negative my friend. In minor shock the best thing to drink is water. In severe shock the best thing to drink is nothing. In severe shock you would need an IV for infusion of fluids. Drinking water while in severe shock could cause nausia, and vomiting which could jeopardize the person's airway as well as further dehydrating them.

When you feel shocky, you do most likely have low blood sugar.

I personally carry hard candy in my purse to solve the problem.

My husband has high blood sugar and I have low .

Life is interesting.
