Help! I want to quit smoking!?!

Question: I've been a heavy smoker for 12 years and it's time to quit. I've tried before and quit for a short while, always starting back up. How can I quit for good? Does anyone have any tips? Has anyone ever quit and want to share their stories? What's the best way to quit ?

I quit not too long ago, I'm using Nicoderm CQ 21 mg patch, I wear it while I sleep so that I don't wake up with a craving. Works well. I also get great support by going to the link at the bottom.
Good Luck

Go to about.com quit smoking, they have a very good support forum. Also there is a new prescription medication called chantix that has a quitting percentage in the 40+% range compared to the others (nicotine gum, inhaler, wellbutrin/zyban: all in the 10% rate). The most important step is wanting to quit and trying to quit. Remember all the quitting products are there to help you cope with quitting but ultimately your will and determination will get you to being smoke free.

I hope you do quit. I was a smoker for 30 years and I tried everything to stop smoking. I might stop for a while, but then I would start up again. I tried classes, patch, gum, pills, accupuncture, hypnosis everything.

What I learned is that in order to stop smoking you have to really be committed. I had over a period of about 10 years limited myself to one pack or less of cigs per day. I woke up one morning and told myself "I am going to quit smoking today". I did and that has been seven almost eight years ago now and I haven't had a cigarette since. It was just the commitment to myself that did it.

I used breathing exercises and focused on something besides my cravings for the first few days -- went absolutely cold turkey and I found it was for me the easiest way to do it.

I don't know if that way will work for you, but you must commit yourself to quitting or it won't work, that I do know. Good luck and I hope you do quit.

I've been a smoker for 30 years.
I was close to quitting with a prescription from my doctor called Chantix.
It seems to work well on cutting out the cravings.
There may be side effects as with any drug.
See the website for Chantix.

My problem, it gave me a rash. I had to quit taking it.
My doctor said I'm the first to have that reaction to it that she knows of. But, she saw the rash for herself.

I still recommend giving it a try because it was the best thing to have ever come close to helping me quit. I was down from 2 packs a day to 2-4 cigarrettes a day in just 2 weeks.

Costly though.
$100.00 + per month.
Sort of a 3 month program but, my doctor said most quit in a month, so she gave me a 1 month supply with the option of having 2 re-fills.
(What do you spend on smokes though?)
Mine were $50.00 a week.

Perhaps you should contact the Quitline and join a Quit Smoking Clinic.

Try Zyban ( a prescription quit-smoking pill.) I have heard a lot of success stories.
