Why did I have 9 patients today?!

Question: With all the research and evidence about nurse burnout, patient safety, medication errors...etc...why are the patient:nurse ratios so high? I work for a "nurse friendly" hospital, but this doesn't feel very nurse friendly.
We don't have LPN's helping and our CNA's are so taxed as well that RN's are in there helping them out.
I wonder if this is typical..is there anything we can do?
What good is research if it's not applied?

Call it "cost effective." Some bean counter is more concerned about the budget than patient care & nurse burn-out.

Yesterday I went to pick up a prescription for my blood pressure. I've been using the sames meds/dosage for several years. The pharmacist misread the script, and gave me Lisinopril instead of Quinapril. Imagine some elderly person who might not have been as observant? Or a family member making the pick up & has no clue?

Scary stuff out there, isn't it?
