Oxycodie addiction.?!

Question: I was diagnosed with a bulging disc " C-7 And C-6 " about 3 weeks ago and was put on the pain killer oxycodone 7.5/500 tab WAT. I am supposed to take 1 tab every 6 hours but have found that 2 tabs every 4 hours was what it takes to kill the pain of my pinched nerve. Well I have since then read a lot about the additions associated with this pain medication and am wondering how long approximately, does it take to become addicted? And also how long does it take to build up a tolerance to this drug. I know that it's a class II narcotic and yes, I am regularly seeing my doctor. I would just like to get some feedback from some real people out there on this matter is all.

Whoa, Tim!!!!!
I wish you would have read about this drug before you started taking it!! But since that time has pasted lets work on now!
I know how painful bulging and herniated disc can be, I had a disc removed 2 yrs ago that was pressing my sciatic nerve, so I am not someone who is advising you without knowing your pain.
I am also a recovering opiate addict that has had to deal with Chronic pain and control my medication responsibly as not to ruin my life again with addiction.
In my opinion you are taking waaayyyy too much oxycodine. If it takes that much to EASE your pain then possibly this horribly addicting medication is not right for you. Medication that is prescribed for something like this is not intended to really keep you pain free you know, it is to EASE the pain. lol
You asked how long it takes to become addicted and there is not simple cut and dried answer for that question. First of all there are 2 factors to addiction, mental and physical. There is no doubt that 3 weeks of that much medication has made you body somewhat physically addicted and if you where to stop now, you may suffer simple withdrawl side effects, nothing too serious(yet!!)
Mental addiction is completely differant and has many, many factors. Your willpower, lifestyle, habits, happiness, body chemistry, and many more factors come into play here and let me tell you it is easy to get "caught up", and difficult to get unstuck!!!! I had to clean myself up from prescription drugs 10+yrs ago and it was one of the two hardest things I have ever done in my life!! There is nothing glamorous about addiction, it takes you places (mentally) that you never would expect. I wish it on NoOne and so many suffer from it now. It breaks my heart. Many people are simply following doctors instructions when they enter addiction, remember 1 thing if nothing else from this answer...........You are the only one responsible for your health and well being, check and double check before you begin any form of pain regime. PLEASE

Since you know where your exact bulge is, I assume you have had an MRI, If I may....I would like to suggest that you take the MRI to a Pain Management Clinic (you must investagate them as well) and allow them to guide you through what would be best for your condition. I have had much luck with my Clinic and feel that my although I am taking very powerful stuff, I am in no way relapsing on my mental drug addiction. (unfortunately I have had to deal with the fact that my body has become addicted and I will always be on these type meds, because my pain is chronic, that is why I only speak of mental addiction) I am never "high" and my medication eases my pain to where I have several good hours a day!!
I am sorry this was so long, I am just so passionate about the over doing of prescription drugs. I know that they become necessary for people but they are sooooo very dangerous that I don't believe that most doctors give enough guideance.
I hope you get some relief from your pain soon!!!!!

Whoaaaaaaaa sweetie I hate this drug. It is highly addictive. I was put on it when I had a knee replacement. If the Dr. who prescribed this is not very careful you will get addicted and quickly. I became dependent in 3 weeks. The difference between addicted and dependent is slightly different. My dose was so high right after surgery that I was supposed to be weaned slowly. I was not and went off it when my daily dose was too high and went into withdrawal.
The way you are taking it is as needed. By taking 2 every 4 hours you are pushing your chance of getting addicted. That means you also could go into withdrawal when the medication is stopped. I would see if there is a different less addicting medication you could take.
