Codeine tablets?!

Question: My GP has given me Codeine tablets to help cure the pain in my spine. I really want to find out if anyone can advise me, from their own experience, when to take them so that I can be assured of a comfortable night's sleep. I am scared to go to bed because lying down sends my back into spasm. When, and if, I go to sleep
I stiffen and have further painful spasms when moving and attempting to get out of bed when I wake. Can anybody please tell me how long it takes for the Codeine tablets to take effect and approx. for how long they remain effective?

I am desparate to get a good nights sleep lying in my bed. The pain is not too bad during the day while I remain upright and active as long as I move carefully.

Thanks.

Follow your doctors advice. Take the pills exactly when and how you've been instructed. If it doesn't work, go back to your doctor and tell him/her the results you've had so he/she can move you to the next level of treatment. That's how doctors work.

were they tylenol with codeine (tylenol 3) or just codeine? Either way, you may wanna take them with a snack so it doesn't upset your stomach. Most pain killers are active for 4-6 hours. If i were u, i'd take one in the morning when i wake up to get up, and one right before bed to sleep. remember not to drink alcohol and avoid sunlight while taking these cuz it'll make you trippy.

Depending on your metabolism or the rate at which your body burns calories, codeine takes from 30-45 minutes to start taking effect.
Generally it is very very effective for 4-5 hours at which time it starts to wear off but, due to the fact you are already asleep you might be just fine.
The only thing you need to be aware of with codeine if you do not know this is it can cause constipation, so eat extra high fibre foods to help compensate for the relaxation of your bowels.
Hope you feel better soon.

Just take them at regular intervals (within the guidelines though!!). This will ensure that they are always in the system. Why not ask your doctor to put you on something else? Diclofenac is a very good analgesia (like a strong ibuprofen) and can be taken with paracetamol to build up a good pain relief.
