I cracked the cartilage in my knee...now what?!
Question: My doctor is sending me for an MRI to double check, but he says that I cracked the cartilage in my knee. If I did crack it...how do they fix it? What's the treatment? Do I have to have surgery?

If you have cracked cartilage, ask your doctor for a referral to an orthopedic surgeon. They will ask you to bring your MRI with you; the orthopedic surgeon will take a look at it and give you treatment recommendations. I brok part of the cartilage in my knee and I also had some arthritis. The surgeon recommended arthoscopy to fix the problem. This procedure involves putting a very small incision in your knee and inserting a scope and tool to straighten out the cartilage problem. That's what I had. Then I had quite a bit of physical therapy. My knee doesn't give me trouble anymore.
Good luck. Don't worry about it. You'll be ok.
