I quit cold turkey after taking 2 every few hours 24 hours a day for about 3 months., I could tell my body was addicted to them.

It was a mistake for me to quit abruptly, I withdrew from them for at least 14 days, and didn't really feel right again for about a month.

The worst symptoms was during the first 7 - 14 days, cold sweaty clammy, flu like symptoms, headache horrible body aches.

Drink plenty of water to flush your system and I drank alot of green tea as well.

If I had to do it again I would taper off.

Good Luck to you.

Discuss this with your doctor, who can help you manage the symptoms. You don't need to do this the hard way.

There is no one-size-fits-all answer to your question, depending on the intensity of your dependence on the drug.

The best way to get off of them, is to wean your self. Cold turky can be a little rough. Might take awhile, depends on your system. Good luck.

If you are already at day 2 without taking them ~ YOU SHOULD be very PROUD of yourself! I honestly think that you are on the right track.
I know you get a really achy feeling and real stiff pain in your muscles kinda like when you are catching the flu right? Anyways, everyone is different but most people addicted to percs couldn't quit for 2 days without taking them. I would totally suggest to you to only take them if you are feeling unbearable. If this method doesn't work then try doing it slower as in going down one or two pills per day until you find they no longer do anything for you. THE problem with percs is that you get immune to them quickly and have to take more and more before they work.
Also, they do have programs now for doctor prescribed "methadone" to help people quit percs, heroine, cocaine etc... In my opinion I absolutely believer that this method although it does work, should only be used as a last resort !!!

THE fact is that it is a long process that includes leaving a urine sample every week (Oh and you have to leave that sample while a nurse is watching ) ~ going to the clinic every single day to get your methadone mixed with Tang (and you still feel sick as they start you on very small doses of methadone and build it up 5 or 10mls at a time) You have to see the doctor once or twice a week or you wont get your prescription ~ It costs anywhere from $5.00 to $7.50 per day if you dont have a drug plan....etc.... THIS program works if you feel you have no other options or you definitely need help to quit....but TRUST that it will not be fun.
& Just so you know, my sister was you, FOUR YEARS AGO! She knew she could turn to the methadone program when she had enough of the percs so she used that as a shield and said, "when I'm ready to quit, I'll just go to the doctor and start methadone" I'm not kidding you, I actually walked into a room and caught her literally swallowing a HANDFUL of percs she was that addicted ~ any normal person would have been in the hospital!!! I was scared out of my mind but apparently this was a thrice a day ritual at that point. 60 pills a day??? Whew!!!
As her older sister I was absolutely devastated to see how out of control the situation had gotten and right under my nose!!! Well, at that point, I pretty much forced her to go see a doctor about getting help & I believe at that moment she finally realized it was time as well....
Well, I am SO PROUD to say that she only has 4 weeks to go and she'll be done. Four years of her life that she wont get back, Four years of paying $5.00 a day as she didn't have a drug plan until recently FOUR years of unimaginable time wasted ~ A new job she loves and has to use her lunch break EVERYDAY to get down to the clinic to get her 'drink' and embarrassed that someone will know that she's on methadone as you have to drink it in front of whoever is at the pharmacy/clinic etc...etc...etc...

Seriously, PLEASE do yourself & your liver a favor and quit now before it becomes a bigger problem.
Turn to something that you really love music, sports, biking, bodybuilding ~ WHATEVER.... just do something right now to get your mind off it and your body back on track.
I really and Sincerely wish you all the best of luck ;)

You have been taking this for a year which means your body is physically dependant on this medication. It is better to wean off slowly if you are doing this on your own. I HIGHLY recommend that you speak to your physician. Detoxing off of anything can affect other medical conditions you may have. (ie: Your blood pressure can spike even if you don't normally have high blood pressure.) If you are taking the prescribed amount, cut your dose down 1 pill every three days until you get to the last pill. Once there, you cut the pills in half and take half a pill for three days and then you should be able to come off. During this time you should have something like clonodine (a blood pressure medication) to help with your racing pulse. It takes two to three weeks for opiates to come completely out of your system and then it takes time for your brain to start making the enkephalins and endorphins that naturally fight pain. It is very possible to go into a depression at this time and you may need to address that situation medically. I have been through this myself and had come off of Vicodin under the supervision of a specialist.
If you are taking more than prescribed and you are taking more and more, then you have an addiction problem and staying off the pills will be a problem....You'll need further help.
Check the website www.allrefer.com select medical encyclopedia then go under "W" and scroll down to select "Withdrawl from opiods". This will give you more info. and confirm some of what I have written. This website will give you all the withdrawl symptoms and advice. Keep alot of advil or extra-strength tylenol on hand for aches and pains and headaches. You can get through this but you should really let your doctor know what's going on. Hang in there!
