Broken toe?!

Question: How can you tell if your toe is broken. I really dont want to take a day off from work to go tot he docotors, unless its serious. I can walk on it, but it hurts a lot.

Can someone tell me if you ever had a broken toe, what are the symptoms?

If it's just fractured toe will be very, very stiff (you may not be able to move it,) swollen, and will most likely show bruising. If you've got a clean break, you won't be able to move it at all. If it's not your big toe, and you think it may only be fractured, and you REALLY don't want to go to the doctor, then use medical adhesive to tape the broken toe to the toe next to it (on the inside--closer to your big toe.) For extra protection, wrap your whole foot in an ace bandge. Then stay off of it as much as possible for at least a week!!!! When you're sitting or lying down, elevate your foot above your heart. Put ice on it while you're elevating it (15 minutes on, 5 minutes off, for at least an hour a day.) It should start to feel better fairly soon.

If you think you've broken your toe clean through, or if it's your big toe and it's very swollen, please go see a doctor. I've broken both big toes, numerous little toes, and 3 other bones in my feet, and did not always take the advice I'm giving you above. I still have pain from time to time in both feet (especially if I step "wrong"--sudden, unholy freaking pain!!!)and the broken big toe that I never went to the doctor for still has a weird bump on the side of it (almost a year later.)

I hope this is a helpful website.

only way to tell if it's really broken is with an x-ray. If it was they would just tape it to the next toe to keep it from moving or getting bashed again. Pain, swelling, bruising & sometimes obvious displacement of the toe are symptoms but again without an x-ray there's no way to be sure....

Well I broke my toe once - stubbed it really hard.
Is your toe swollen or slightly bent?

How long has it been like this?
When I broke my toe the pain went after a few days and I even managed to walk Nijmegan (100 miles over 4 days) in Holland with my toe untreated - not a good idea, extremely painful and lots of puss (lovely). However my friend also broke his toe and he had to have a pin inserted into his toe and have crutches for several weeks.

Try using some medical tape to wrap it to another toe to keep it straight - this can supposedly help it sort itself out

But - if it has been a while and it is still painful then go to the doctors, its not worth being in pain if it can be sorted.

I broke my toe. I went to the orthopedic. They told me that they couldn't do anything at all for it. Don't waste your time and money.

Just get some medical tape and wrap around it.

You know if it gets swollen.
