Has anyone had a knee arthroscopy?!

Question: I may need one... I'm going to the doctor's tomorrow for an MRI. I have a feeling I tore my knee cartilage during volleyball or basketball season. I can't play basketball anymore, so that sux... lol... but will it hurt? And do they just numb it or knock you out? I have done my research, and found this site:

Thanks!

I have had 13 of them. For most of them I had the choice of whether I wanted to be awake or asleep, meaning have an epidural for local anesthesia and numb the bottom half of me, or have general anesthesia and be asleep. Your pain and how you heal will all depend on what is done when the surgeon goes in there. I have had surgeries where I could literally walk out of the hospital after a few hours and others where I was on crutches for months. It will all depend on what the MRI shows. Don't worry until you have something to worry about. GL.

Yes, I have had an arthroscopy. I had it 4 months ago, and they do knock you out, you wont feel a thing until you wake up. They will give you some pain killers right after the procedure. Your knee is gonna hurt like hell if you dont take them. Good Luck.

I had it done several years ago and they knocked me completely out but thing may have changed now. I had tore a pcl in my left knee playing baseball. I was sore for about a week after the surgery and had to take it easy for a week or so but I was back playing ball the next year after my pcl was repaired.

I've had it and it was done under general anesthetic as an outpatient.

I had torn my cartilage in half as well as torn a piece off that was totally removed. I also tore my meniscus tendon.

It really didn't hurt a lot post-surgery, but it was stiff and I had to use a cane for about a month.

Hi Casey,

I had one done. It won't hurt a bit. They knock you out and you won't remember a thing.

It will be a little tender but I could get around fine. They took me to the car in a wheelchair and gave me a pair of crutches. I used the crutches to get into our house with no problems. They gave me a prescription for pain pills and I never even took one. It just didn't hurt. Sore for a few days but it really was a piece of cake.

They do it as an out patient. I was out of the hospital in about three hours and was asleep half that time.

Don't worry, you will do fine.

I was knocked for both of mine...but it depends on the doctor. Some do local anesthesia, some knock you out. The surgery itself is done on an outpatient procedure. I went in at the crack of dawn and was out of the surgery center by 2 in the afternoon. The surgery itself doesn't take very long.

there is a little pain and is mostly just and uncomfortable. but what really hurts is the rehab. It wasn't bad. My shoulder surgery hurt more than both of my knee surgeries. It also depends on your pain tolerance as well.

You'll be fine.

i had a meniscus surgery last year. you'll be put under by general anesthesia and it'll seem like you're out for a few minutes when really it's an hour or 2. your knee probably won't hurt much 'til later that night or the next day. the surgeon will tell you when he wants you to bear weight on it. for me it was the next day after the surgery, but if you have torn ligaments that could differ. if the surgeon wants you on your feet soon after the surgery listen to him. i kinda pussed out and used a cane for 10 days after the surgery and my knee stayed really stiff. as soon as he saw me with the cane he told me to get rid of it and walk. it started getting way more flexible in a hurry. you'll also want to go to physical therapy afterward to get strength and range of motion back. trust me on this....the more you baby it the longer it'll take to get better.
