It seems like it doesn't take much of anything to hurt my neck...why?!

Question: I'm only 26 years old. I could be laying down and turn my head, or shrug my shoulders in a certain way. I have pulled a muscle in my neck on COUNTLESS occasions. The worst thing is that it takes days, sometimes a week, for it to feel normal again, leaving me unable to turn my head past a certain degree. It is really agitating and I would love some input on how to improve my minor ailment. Thanks!

Your neck muscles are probably weak, but also you could have some arthritis in your neck or a chronic injury, maybe from an accident. If you don't remember injuring your neck then it's probably safe to begin stretching exercises. Start by sitting very upright in a straight chair and slowly look to your right, just far enough that it doesn't hurt too bad. Do that 10 times. Then do the same on your left. Next slowly tilt your head toward your right shoulder. Do that 10 times, Then do your left. Each day do these
exercises 3 times. After a week do a few more. It's also important to be aware of things you are doing that may be irritating your neck. Some things are the wrong pillow, reading with a book in your lap, looking up at a computer screen, sitting half propped up in bed with your neck not properly supported, driving long distances, and just being tense. Try a shower massage, and use a muscle rub immediately afterwards. Sometimes aspirin or Advil help the inflammation. For some people and icepack on the back of the neck works wonders. Good luck.

You can try these exercises to help improve the function of your neck from the inside out. You might also want to see a chiropractor to evaluate you to make sure there isn't something else going on.
