Yes, it is true to some extent. It is really a precautionary measure. What happens when you hit your head on something or something hits on your head, your brain bounces around inside your skull. If it bounces hard enough, it can cause swelling and swelling can cause you to become unconscious. If you are asleep there is no way to know you became unconscious instead of simply asleep. If you become unconscious because of swelling, time is of the essence to reduce the pressure and if they do not know anything happened, they can't do anything and you could end up brain damaged or dead. So, as a precaution, they want you to stay awake. That way, if you DO become unconscious, they immediately know so they can take appropriate action to save your life. Err on the side of caution and have someone with you and stay awake. Next, head on off to get yourself checked out. Better to be safe than sorry. A friend of mine, last year, felled a tree that was leaning in his back yard. We both live in Washington State in mostly forested land with only places cleared for roads and the pads the houses are built on top of. The rest is pretty much the forest it was before the roads and houses. As he was cutting into the base, a very large limb, about 20 feet long fell from about 50 feet up and bounced off the back of his neck and shoulders as he leaned over into the chainsaw. He shrugged it off and went about his business of bringing the tree down before it fell on his house. One problem surfaced, a persistent headache which aspirin did not seem to do anything about. Finally, his wife insisted he go get things checked out since a week-long headache is NOT normal. It turns out the x-rays showed a fracture in a vertebrae in his neck. The bone was so weakened by the crack that a simple slap on his face could have broken his neck completely and killed him. Fortunately, his wife isn't the slapping kind...

i would rather just try to stay awake or you'll get a concusion

I was also told that you must not sleep if you have just hit your head quite badly. Not sure if its true, like your asking.

prob a good idea to stay awake for a bit incase u have concussion or sumthing like that

It is true,You might have concussion.

That was what the medical advice was when my 12 year old daughter was a baby but when my 2 year old fell over and bumped her head about 5 months ago they said it was fine to let her sleep - however they did tell me to wake her every 2-4 hours - not completely wake her just rouse her enough for her to recognise me - if you do sleep just make sure someone is there to keep an eye on you

bit of a bugga if you hit it just before bedtime

If you're feeling sick it's a good idea to stay awake.

No it isn't an old wives tale sweetheart, and I'm certainly not laughing. I know how these things happen. If you have a headache and you are feeling sick sick you MUST get to a doctor or the emergency room as soon as possible. It is possible you have concussion. Whatever you do, DO NOT fall asleep. If you have blurred vision as well, go immediately and get help. Take care and good luck. Let us know how you are.

yeppo, stay awake until u feel sleepy x

if you are in a car accident for instance and you hit your head, you are not allowed to go to sleep if you are alone because your brain might swell and you can go into a coma, but this happens only in very serious accidents.

lol sorry i did laugh, you may have concussion so sleeping is not a good idea,if you do start feeling sick or dizzy make sure you let someone know and seek medical advice

well bad luck really - you might have concussion but why if you think you are in trouble cant you sort something simple like this out - go to A & E or your doctors if its open.... you banged your head thats it... dont dramatise the situation if you can write a message on here you are probably capable of looking after your own ****..... jeez x yours Svet

since you say that you feel sick and tired i'd stay awake for an hour or two.

It's an old wives' tale. It's OK to let a person sleep, providing they can be woken OK. Signs to be concerned about:

dizziness
vomiting or nausea
unconsciousness
slurring of speech
inability to wake up after falling asleep

Any of those symptoms are indicative of concussion, and medical attention is required

No, a person can sleep. If you have a bad concussion it's a good idea for someone to wake you every few hours. If you can't be woken that's the sign of some serious brain damage.

There is no damage done by going to sleep after a head injury, however it becomes more difficult to asses whether the patient is showing any signs of more significant injury. If a patient is assessed at hospital following a head injury and it is decided that there is no apparent problem, then they are not told to avoid sleeping. If however the injury is considered significant, and they are admitted to hospital, there neurological observations, BP pulse, conscious level and pupillary reactions, are checked frequently.

Well it's like this darling. If you hit your head with a feather duster, then you can go to bed anytime you want.

However, if you hit your head with a big heavy metal hammer, then you can go to bed anytime you want.
