Anaesthesia?!

Question: If I've had general anaesthesia in the past and did not have any bad reactions to it, does that mean I never will? I'm having surgery in a couple of months and am really nervous about it because of freak stories you hear about people going into a coma and dying. If I've had it before should I be fine? (providing the anaesthesiologist does not screw up).

You should be fine. Everybodies body is different and as you age it changes, so I wouldnt say it's not possible. But...seriously, try not to worry. It'll only stress you out and you don't need that now. Have a little faith in your doctors and the 8 or more years they spent in med school.

Yes, you should be fine. Talk about your concerns with the anaesthesiologist when you go for your pre-surgery office visit.

yes my mom had multiple surgerys on her neck spine and ne. every one she was under anasteiasa... you will be fine

If you have the same anaesthesiologist as before you'll be a little more secure. My mother has had seven bouts with general anaesthesia and had 2 bad experiences. It wasn't really as bad as a coma -- just a "bad trip" on one and an asthma attack while on the table on another. She says that anaesthesia is more of an art and dependent on the skill of the doctor.

You will be fine, those horror stories are most likely people who are not very well in the first place (multiple medical problem, major trauma).

A neurologist once told me that you can take a medication for years without any problems, then suddenly have a reaction to it. It all depends on your immune system.
