Each area has its pros and cons. ICU and OR emphasize technical skills/equipment. For personal human interaction you can't beat OB or Peds or dialysis. There is such a difference among facilities- my best advice is to find a setting that highly values nursing staff and demonstrates that
with good pay, continuing education, reasonable ratios, good benefits, etc. Don't be afraid to change jobs if something doesn't work out for you.You are a valuable commodity and opportunities are many for nurses today.
I prefer the Neonatal ICU, OB/GYN clinic, & Labor & Delivery, but thats just me. Now I run a ECMO (heart/lung bypass machine) which you have to have ICU experience for. Your options are endless. If you don't like what you start with, then you can switch. The beauty of nursing.
