I can't tell if I have a finger jam or a broken finger????!

Question: Four days ago I was playing basketball and a man did his hardest chest pass to try and get it across the gym. I was three feet away with my hands in the air and the ball wammed into my middle finger. It swelled up and bruised right away and it hurt A LOT. I got some ice and sat on the sidelines but the pain just wouldn't go away. It is still very swollen and bruised and my middle knuckle hurts at a 7/10 all the time and when i try to bend it, it hurts 10/10 like when I just got the ball slammed into it. I have a very good pain threshold (broken arms, stitches, broken legs ect.) and I can't tell if my finger is a jam or a break. My doctor says I should get X-rays if it keeps hurting after this weekend.

My son had the very same injury, basketball hitting the tip of his middle finger. We, as you do, thought it was jammed, but lo & behold the bone in the middle finger had been pushed so hard that it split the bone in his hand. He had to have an open reduction done to repair the bone in his hand. Please go & do what your Dr. advised, "get your hand x-rayed"Surgery, & a cast only lasts for a few weeks, compared to alot of pain from doing nothing

Does the pain feel somewhat splintery? If it does, it's broken. Either way, you'll need to see a doctor tomorrow right away because it could be something even serious.

Get the x-ray..... I didn't and regret it..... Mine was broken..
I waited to long to get the x-ray and the bone was healed to much by that time. After the swelling went down you can see a where the bone healed incorrectly (small bump of bone sticking out the side of my knuckle). The doctor said the only way to fix it would have been to re break it since it had already healed so much. Eeeeeek!
I decided just to deal with the bump. (looks like the knuckle is a little larger in the side) And do physical therapy (squeezing a racket ball several times a day to improve the fingers strength and flexibility after the doctor gave the OK to.

its takes about the same amount of time for either to heal or stop hurting..... there is not alot of things a doctor can do but wrap it and tell you not to use it.... if its not bent weird then your ok just try not to do much with that finger for a week or so it will hurt and thats that...... i have broken all mine once or twice not to say both arms one leg ten ribs and knee...you will be fine dont waste the money unless it purple and bent funny ... if not then you are good it will take a few weeks to get back right
