What's wrong with doctors?!

Question: I've had bad headaches for about 4-5 years now.I've had the same doctor for 3 of those years.Everytime I have an appointment (about once a month) I complain of the headaches. They're migraines and they do interfere with my every day life.I've tried alot of painkillers and whle they dull the pain it never really goes away.Where doI get these painkillers? From people I know.I'm an adult, not a teenager seeking to get high.My doctor refuses to give me anything but 800mg ibuprofen. This doesn't work at all.Maybe because I've been taking it so long.I recently had to go to the ER yet again for a headache that was affecting my vision. The ER doctor gave me Fioricet. It helped so much and didn't make me feel high.So at my last visit I asked for a prescription of it.He refused to give me more than 10 because it's "addictive".I'd rather be addicted than suffer from migraines all the time. He's was adament about that but freely gives me Soma to help with back pain and Prozac for depression.

If that doc is willing to give you Soma & Prozac, maybe he would consider Cymbalta? This is an antidepressent and also helps with back pain. Also my daughter gets migraines and she found that taking Boniva (an over the counter generic version of Dramamine (motion sickness pills)) would stop her headaches within a short period of time. Her migrains were so bad, that she was routinely given MRI's and spinal taps in the ER. It made going to the ER a very unpleasant experience. You really do need to go to a pain clinic. They can help a whole bunch. Also keeping a journal is a great idea. Write down what you were doing when it started, What if anything you'd had to eat the previous 1/2 - 1 hour before, and anything else you can think of that might have contributed to the onset of the headache/migraine. How well do you deal with stress? There are all kinds of coping strategies that you can find here on the web. Try Discovery Health and WebMd web sites. Both have sections dealing with migraines and stress. I'm sorry that you are suffering so much. Good luck and I'll pray you find a soulution to these nasty headaches.

u should watch what you eat and drink as well as though! cafeine could be helping w/the headaches. watching a lot of tv or being on computer could as well. if nothing else, get your eyes checked! it could have something to do w/them!!

Please try seeking a opinion from another Doctor. You should also be referred to a specialists who deals in this problem you suffer with. They may be able to do tests to see why you suffer with these headaches.Explain to your Doctor that it would be good to have the medication prescribed to you so that you can have some pain free days. All the best.

My daughter has your problem, with asthma, she can't take most drugs without a reaction. A chiropractor relative told her to use a cold pack on the back of her neck, and to drink tons of water which open the blood vessels in the brain. It takes about an hour, but works for her. The water works for me too, when I feel one coming on.

What's wrong with doctors is that we have to live with the DEA and our state medical boards, who are all wrapped up in the "war on drugs." We live in constant fear of having the regulators swoop in and accuse us of over-prescribing drugs that get diverted to improper use. Your doctor is just a little more paranoid about it than most.
Of more concern, though, is the approach to treating your headaches. You will, of course, need something to take for relief on occasion, but if you're having migraines all the time, you need more treatments than just pain relievers. People with frequent migraines should have some medication to limit the number of migraines, and perhaps that is his thinking in using the Prozac, in addition to using it for depression, but there are others. You might also benefit from an abortive drug when you do get them, and your headaches should ideally have to get past both those pharmacologic barriers before it even gets to the point of taking pain relievers.

if you are having migraines, even the most strong painklillers will not provide any relief.. what you need is Imitrex, or maxalt, they work great for migraines and are non narcotic , the downside to imitrex is you can only get 6 a month and if you get more than 6 migraines then you are out of luck. Most doctors are not in the habit of writing a script for whatever a patient ask for, he will write a scipt based oh his knowledge of your treatment

There appears to be nothing "wrong" with your MD. He is simply trying to treat you without addicting you to narcotics. He also is protecting himself . Every MD is scrutinized by the Federal Bureau of Narcotics. The Soma and the Prozac are not controlled drugs. Prozac is NOT addicting and the Soma is addicting if NOT taken according to directions.

Have you tried Imitrex, comes in pills, injection, nasal spray.

Also Topamax http://www.topamax.com/topamax/?WT.srch=...

There are many PROVEN nonnarcotic medications available for migrains

Of course you could always change MD's after 3 years of dissatisfaction seems like you need a change.. LEW

.

I have to agree with your doctor by not giving you stronger stuff.
He knows your problem is not a medical one. However if he tells you the truth he looses a customer, his livelihood.
Migraines are stress induced.
Do not go down the same path your aunt did.
Find out what is the real cause of the migraines.
Feeling stupid and helpless can be a cause.
The hardest part for a woman, that cares, is the decision for what man to put out for.
How to make a living. How be accept yourself, and so on.
Try using an ionic air cleaner in your bedroom. I no longer wake up with a headache. Give it time, a few weeks, to become effective.
Wean yourself from these pain killers.
They will destroy your body in the long run.
For your back pain. Maybe you are laying around too much. Get some exercise. Got to keep those muscles active. Study what you eat and why. Did I just give you another headache ?
P.S.
Just looked at your profile.
You have all these animals. They produce a lot of crap. Get the air cleaner, maybe two. You have a lot on your plate. Lighten your work load. Seeing your picture. Maybe your too driven, feeling trapped.
You will conquer your pain.

I would recommend letting your doctor know that you really hurt and would like to have a consultation with a Pain Management doctor to see what additional suggestions they may have.

Maybe your not going to the right doctor. Have you tried a Neurologist?
I take "Topamx" for migrainee headaches, like all other drugs it has side effects of which I have never had. It is also used for nerve pain from the cervical spine area to the head(back pain)
A migrain head-ache is an indication there's something wrong, after all this time, the doctor should have some idea what it is.
Either you have a bad back and he's not saying. I won't go into what it could be, it's to long and intensifying, you may just have a depressive nerve problem. Without further analysis, it's hard to determine.

Hey, I had a similar problem with my doctor, he said it wasn't migraines I was having as I couldnt find the 'trigger' for them. Even though I have a family history of migraine and they were so bad I was missing work and uni from them, he said it was just stress headaches. They are all the way down one side of my head and have flashing lights, feeling sick and dizzy and altered state (I cant hold a conversation when having a migraine as I cant follow what people are saying to me). Sounds like a migraine to me right?
Well my doctor told me I was obviously depressed and offered me antidepressants! After several months of this and several doctors (at the same practice and they all said they agreed with the first doctor) I gave up and tried something totally different, acupuncture.
I had totally given up on regular medicine, I cant take migraine stuff cus of allergies, so I tried this and you know what. 1 year later and I can count how many migraines Ive had on one hand. Ive since changed doctors and the new ones agree that it was migraine and are very happy that I found my own way of dealing with them.
It was pretty expensive I have to say, but it was more than worth it.

Sounds like you and I have a lot in common. I've been having headaches for about six years now but nothing really helps at all. I've tried everything from advil, and amitriptyline to Imitrex and everything in between. None of those work. What you should do is get a second opinion from a different doctor. My best friend had very severe headaches for three years and she went to four different doctors. All but one refused to give her a scan + mri and when she finally got the tests done, they found a tumor. She got it taken care of early enough though and she's happy and healthy as ever today :)

I hope you get your problem solved. Godbless and I wish you the best.

Hi there Cupcake...geez, what a lot of info you've gathered here..my my...lmao!! 1st off, keep a journal.. if you've the time..a pain/migrain journal so that you may show(do not give him the original) your MD...If he opts to not follow the Hippocratical oath he took in order to get his license to practice(google the Hippocratical Oath and read it for yourself) , Ask for a referral to a Pain Treatment Program..and should he refuse, demand his reasonings in writing. Next, search for a different doctor, maybe ask those you have to bum meds from, who their Doctor is!! Unfortunately, I had Migraines for years...and AFTER getting them under control, they lessened until finally, they were gone, or at least I can say I seldom have one, and I had them so bad they'd have to hospitalize me, keep me sedated for up to a week...imagine that crap!! UGH!! Please don't let those who have not walked a mile in your shoes bother you..tis unhealthy for YOU!! Flick 'em off like a booger!!! And you ARE RIGHT, tis better to be PHYSICALLY ADDICTED than to be in so much pain you CANNOT FUNCTION!! Pain Medication is for PAIN!! HELLO PEEPS!! If there is an issue over a DEA Number, do a contract..it keeps the physician out of the ill-prescribing limelight! Hun, you can buy Fiorict cheaply over the net//canadian med Pharmacies sell it freely, as they do Codeine!! If you need more help, please add to my network, I will accept you and then email you so that I can try to help you..I have been there ...it can make one suicidal and I am sorry for what you're going through...My BEST to YOU and YOUR LIL ONE....Hugs, Health, Hope and Happiness
