Can a knee torn Cartilage be repaired?!

Question: 2 years ago I did a very stupid mistake, I hit a wall with my right leg. I wasn't able to walk for about 2 days, then I went to a dr after a month, as I was busy. After physical examination he told me nothing to worry about, anyway from that time I have gained about 30 pounds and my knee hurts every day. I can walk and exercise but I can't do squats at all, I started a diet and I have lost weight.
I have seen another dr few months ago and he told me that I have a torn cartilage, he told me that I should ignore the pain. I want exercise and have a normal life, do I need surgery? when you can say that? does it worth it? Does the surgery will clean up the cartilage or repair it?

On whether or not you need surgery, I cannot tell from here. But on the clean up vs. repair on the knee cartilage, I can tell you this, if you are younger than say 25-30 yr old you have a greater chance it can be repaired. The main limiting factor is where the cartilage (meniscus) is torn. If it is torn along the thin inside edge then it will be cleaned up. If the tear is closer to the outer edge, the better the chance of a repair would be successful. The reasoning for this is the closer you get to the inner edge of the cartilage, there is little to no blood flow, which means it is has slim to no chance that if it is repaired, it will heal fully. Which one is done would ultimately be up to your surgeon.

You can get it repaired my father has had it done. Although there is a risk you run, my father is in constant pain because the surgery works better for some people then other. Now if you are losing weight, thats great it plays a major part and not to mention make it alot easier to do the surgery and the recovery after. I suggest you go for it because once you get older its going to hurt you even more so you might as well go ahead and get it done.

The surgery repairs the cartilage but it depends with each case. Some people may have a different circumstance, such as a worse tear then yours. Go see your doctor and see what he says. Judging from what you wrote, it is not that bad so all they would probably do is repair it.

The torn cartilage is trimmed/removed.
