Ganglion Cyst?!

Question: I am a cheerleader and a former Bruster's employee. (constantly putting a lot of pressure on my wrist) I have had pain in my wrist for at least two years. It comes and goes and is sometimes extremely painful.
I asked the school athletic trainer about it and he said it was a ganglion cyst. He said if it bothers me, then to tape my wrist before stunting or tumbling.
I am really sick of the on and off pain that this causes and I would like more treatment than just to "tape my wrist". I don't think mine is that big because you can only see it when I bend my wrist downward. There is a bump and an indention looking thing. Ive heard that they sometimes stick a needle in it and pull the fluid out. Mine doesn't seem big enough to do that. I also am NOT willing to hit it with a book.
What would a doctor normally suggest? Surgery?

Having surgery will prevent it from coming back too soon. If you have it drained, it may come back faster. I have known people who have had them removed surgically and they don't come back. Draining or removal are really the only options for ganglion cysts and NO, don't smash it with a book! :)

Well if it is a gaglion cyst then you might want to look into surgery. Its not very painful and not too much time to heal.

I had one on my wrist. The first time I had it drained, it came back within a few months. The second time I had it drained was over eight years ago.
One of my friends had her surgically removed and it was back within weeks.
I personally would try having it drained. It can come back either way. It is cheaper and less painful to just have it drained.
