Different types of pain medication?!

Question: is it okay to take different types of pain medication at the same time? for example naproxen and ibuprofen?

As a general rule, I would say no. However, the different pain meds do different things - some reduce swelling while others are muscle relaxants, etc, and some people who suffer from chronic pain need more than one way to beat the pain. For me, I take Ibuprofen and Naproxen at the same time to get rid of my migraines, because while one alone won't get it, the combination does the trick for me. But be very VERY careful. Meds can interfere with each other, and make you very sick. So talk to your doc about it, and see what s/he says. Also, look into alternative pain relief methods, such as massage therapy and acupuncture.

throw in a little oxycontin while you are at it.

Look at the bottle and make sure that the ingredients in one doesnt affect the other. It might say dont take with.... Be careful

For information like this you should be asking your doctor or pharmacy. There can be serious side effects to mixing certain drugs. (even over the counter stuff) Don't rely on this place to give accurate info.

I wouldn't do it. Its better to be safe then sorry

there is nothing in medicine indicate to take more than one pain medication, the rule is that if a pain occur treat it with ur best medication depending on the severity of pain.
any way if 2 medications should be taken together they should not be contraindicated to be taken togother to avoid drug interaction, u can make sure of that by reading the drug leaflet regarding "drug interaction"

It is okay in some instances, but it would be best to discuss it with a medical professional first. Some drugs have side effects for example, aspirin and ibuprofen both thin the blood so it would be dangerous to take those two together. If this is long term pain it would be best to talk to your doctor who will put you on a regime to manage your pain. For the short term I'd just stick to one type of pain medication to be on the safe side.
