How long does it typically take a severe ankle sprain to heal?!

Question: I was running after my dog about month and a half ago, and stepped in a hole and fell, twisting my ankle very badly. I went the urgent care and got x-rays, and it was diagnosed as a severe sprain. Problem is, 45 days later, it still hurts to walk on and is still swollen around the ankle. Is this normal?

yes it is especially since you stepped in a hole and twisted your ankle....you pretty much had all that weight on your one ankle. It will take time to heal. You can never really say when exactly it will be completely healed due to different factors.
But count in a good 6-12 weeks.
You should stay off of it for as long as possible.
Follow the RICE principal
Rest (stay off that ankle)
Ice (Ice the ankle for 20 minutes on 20 minutes off for the next two hours)
Compression (Wrap the ankle in an ace bandage. Make sure it's tight, but not to the point where it cuts off circulation. That would be too tight)
Elevation (Keep the ankle elevated)
You can also take something like aspirin to help with the swelling.
Do some ankle exercise...move your ankle in circular motion.
But only to a point where it doesnt hurt as much.Maybe ypu should tape your ankle before and/or put an elastic bandage on.And also massage your ankle. This will prevent it from getting stiff.Just gently massage around the bone and the tender area.Other than that all you can do is be patient.
Good luck!!

up to a year for soft tissue injuries. keep your appointments with the orthopedist and request physical therapy.
