Occasional smoking bad for your health?!

Question: i am an occasional smoker
for example i only smoke when i've been drinking which is about once a month
im not addicted to fags at all
but i had one 2 nights ago and i got a sore throat straight afterwards
and its still pretty sore now and it hurts to swallow

i know its winter and it could just be a cold
but i thought it was a bit weird that i got it straight after i smoked
is having just a couple of cigarettes a month still as bad for my health as like, 10 a day?

A couple of cigarettes per month will hardly affect you in the long term. Passive smoking has more impact on a body than that!
Any doctor will tell you that it's better not to smoke at all, but you're not going to go to an early grave smoking so little.

As for the sore throat, it's unlikely that 1 ciggie did that to you, it's probably an infection of some kind, or a cold as you suspect.

(wish i could smoke so little)

It's still bad for you.

2 cigarettes a month isn't bad as long as you don't get addicted. You cannot compare 10 a day habit to two per month. Totally different. lol.

Edit - I agree with Gary K.

It isn't GOOD for you, but severely less bad for you then if you are a regular smoker.

C'mon are you serious?

Obviuosly not as bad as a regular smoker. But best not to smoke at all because if you get addicted it's hellish to give up. Your sore throat is probably a virus.

of course the more you smoke the worse it is, occasional smoker must be a new term, who is a occasional smoker you know? Either you do or don't or are a wannabe, just let it go you will be much better off down the road, thats the truth

Don't know how bad it is for your health - but cigarette smoke really does stink.

Smoking is bad - be it only 2 sticks, or 10. However, compared to 10 sticks, 2 sticks is really really little. So that's good. But it'll still affect your health tremendously!

Any smoking is potentially bad for you, and a serious risk. Seriously.

Why bother at all? All smoke is bad for you, even non-smokers (ever heard of "Passive smoking?) You must be concerned about as you would not have asked this question on "Yahoo".

It is bad for you obviously not as bad as smoking everyday but if not smoking because you have to whats the point in doing it, if you fill in a life insurance cover it asks if you are a smoker yes or no no matter how many you have and you have to be quit for two years I think before you can have it taken off your insurance so its just not worth it for a couple here n there.

The smoking & the pain when swallowing are NOT connected. You better see a doctor because it might be Acute Tonsillopharyngitis (ATP). Pain when swallowing is the most common symptom of ATP. It can be viral or bacterial. If the doctor see exudates in your throat then it's definitely bacterial. And you need antibiotics because it is caused by a bacteria. As for the smoking I don't think that's too bad. The "significant" smoking is 20-pack years. We compute it by the number of packs of cigarette smoked in a day multiplied by the number of years smoked. If you have a 20-pack year smoking history then you're more prone to develop pulmonary diseases. But would you wait for that? Certainly not. So it's still better to refrain from smoking. I hope this helps. -dennisMD

There is good evidence that even smoking one cigarette a day significantly raises your heart attack risk and does increase your risk of lung cancer and bronchitis as well. This is why passive smoking is considered so dangerous.

It does not matter if you are occasional smoking or a chain smoker, it will give you the same result poor health and an early death.
