How will the doctor decide if I need a muscle relaxant?!

Question: I have had a hurt muscle under the shoulder for 5 days now. At first it was a localized area and now seems to have spread to the entire shoulder area.

The nurse that I spoke with on the phone just now had me make an appointment this morning. I told her that I have been using OTC pain patches, heating pad and massage for 5 days. She said the doctor needs to see me because I may need a muscle relaxant.

What criteria must I meet in order for her to make the descision to prescribe one for me?

If simple medications, like non-asprin and ibuprofen, don't help, and simple home remedies like heat patches aren't working. That's usually a sign that you need to make your treatment a little more intense, like with a muscle relaxer. Your doctor might even proscribe a low dose pain killer along with the muscle relaxer to help ease the pain. I hope you get to feeling better soon.

depends on your condition

Let us look at this, you state you hurt your muscle and now it has spread? Any rash could it be shingles and not a muscle? Could it be a trapped nerve? Perhaps the start of Arthritis? Could it be calcification? The reason why the Doc wants to see you is to examine you to rule in and rule out diagnosis. Only when the Doc has checked for various problem, will they then decided what the problem is and the course of treatment. Unless you have a Medical License and know it is 'just' a hurt muscle? Good Luck
