this used to be a popular debate in my office (i work for a major hospital and trauma center) so we asked a physical medicine doctor (they to physical therapy and pain management mostly for athletes)

this is what the doc said: cracking and popping your joints does not cause arthritis nor does it cause more pain in the joints......it may actually relieve some pain as all joints tend to fill with fluid and can also be affected by changes in temps and weather conditions

only an active athele that is constantly using their joints strenuously would run the risk of arthritis or problems with the joints

my doctor says it is fine for most people.......

It can mess up the cartilage in your joints over time.

Nope. It is not bad for you. So crack all you want!

you get arthritis from doing so what ever you don't do it

I've heard it'll give you arthritis when you get older.

not, its just air bubbles in your joints, people will tell u that it causes arthritis, thats just a myth

I heard that if you keep cracking them once you get older you'll get weaker bones...but idk for sure, lol i keep doing it too =/

no its not bad at all if anything is more good
makes you more flexible and perhaps will help you avoid injuries

i have done it since i was a kid like 13 am 28 and nothing wrong with me

i heard it releases built up pressure between your joints and is good for you in moderation. Natural cracking is good for you, intentional cracking isnt smart

Still in good working order after half a century. It can't be that bad.

causes arthritis, I heard!

I'm not sure if this is what you mean but take a look here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cracking_kn...

no, it's okay to do it once in a while, but doing it every hour of the day isn't that good. it releases nitrogen bubbles and makes a cracking sounds. it's good for you once in a while

You're not actually cracking your bones. You're slipping the ligaments across the joints, which is what causes the snapping noise.

Ligaments, tendons, and other connective tissue don't have a blood supply, and can't regenerate like other tissue in your body can. So when you stretch them, and injure them, they don't heal.

That's why a sprain is worse than a break. When you sprain your ankle, you stretch and rip the tendons, but they won't heal by themselves, you have to fix them with surgery. Bones on the other hand heal quite readily.

So when you crack your joints, you are injuring the ligaments that connect the bones at the joint. It can cause degeneration of the tissue in that area, and yes, it is harmful.

Good grief people, if you had bubbles of nitrogen gas in your joints you would have the bends and be in the worst pain you could imagine. Think divers who don't decompress properly.

I Don't Think Its That Harmful

Though It Has Been Known To Get Arthritis from Cracking

There Fingers Whilst Clicking

People Find It Fun I Find It Irritating

Although My Jaw Clicks Everytime i Eat

But It Does It Itself I Dont Do It on Purpose

xx

find a new habit such as smoking or drinking

Feels good. I do it all the time.

i have a problem with that to i did it all the time until i put vinegar on ma hands and when i reached to crack my fingers the smell put me off but i did it anyway. CRACK, CRACK if you want my advice just keep your mind on something else dont think about cracking them. it helped me.

Whether it is good or bad for you depends on your situation.

For me, my spine was misaligned, my foot broken & I had various other injuries due to several car accidents over many years. I could snap various areas back into shape by cracking them - - so it was a good thing. Both my internist & my chiropracter told me that if it provided me relief, I should continue to do it.

If you don't have any misaligned vertebrae, etc. I'm not sure what cracking your bones might do.

What does your doctor say?

cracking knuckles?
you are grinding your bones over the cartilage.
and may get arthritis later on.
look at them now.
are they swollen?
