Pains in my wrists and fingers. What can cause this and how can it be sorted?!

Question: I wake up every morning with pains in my wrists and both my hands ache all the time. I find that my wrists are always bent when I'm sleeping and I suppose that's the reason for the pain, but it continues all day, along with joint pain in both my hands. I guess it can be old age lol but I'm not even 40 yet! Anyone any ideas on what it could be and how I can make it better? Thanks in advance :)

It sounds like Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) which is caused by any form of movement that you frequently repeat. The most common cause of RSI is typing. I got a new laptop in July and my hands are always positioned wrong and as as result I now have RSI.

Other than keyboards, it can be any other kind of action which puts your arm under strain - my mother has RSI which she got from carrying too many shopping bags!

Go to your doctor for a proper diagnosis. If it is RSI he/she will be able to give you some really simply arm exercises that will help with the aching.

i have that, it sounds like carpel tunnel syndrome.
its not serious and u dont get medication for it, the doctor will advise u with some exercises and maybe wrist supports to wear at night.
hope this helps

Hi,you might be cutting off the blood supply.Best to be safe go see your doctor for a check up.Good Luck

Rhumatism, you don't have to be old to get it, just wear and tear, take Glucosamine, it's very good, and you can get it on prescription.

sometimes your fingers can cause you pain due to B12 shortage...something that can be easily diagnosed with a simple blood test and can be dealt with through B12 shots or pills.

Arthritis can hit at any age. It destroys the covering on the bones in the hands, wrist. Eventually they loose their smoothness and start looking like an old barber carpet. Then the trouble starts when they start moving against one another.

Go to an Orthopedic or a good hand doctor. He will put in, while your asleep, a arthroscope, it a needle with a camera on the end. this is put in several places around the hand and, wrist. They will take pictures and, discuss the problems with you.
I have had surgery on one hand, a ten inch plate with twelve screws is in place. I cannot bend my hand. This will eventually happen in years to come through the arthritis, this way, it's controlled. My wrist kept "Popping " out of joint, now the other hand is doing it. It's a simple fusion. Takes about one hour.
At least have the arthroscope to see what's wrong.

If you have been using the computer, or otherwise done alot of an activity which involves alot of similar movements in the wrist/hand area it sounds like it could be RSI, the treatment for which is rest and avoiding the activity causing the repetitive movements for a while, exercises can help as well though so seeing a doctor might be a good idea. It could be something more serious like arthritis or something as well though so worth getting it checked out, carpal tunnel is another possibility which can sometimes be cured with a minor routine surgery so well worth checking it out as it might be treatable.

Either way the treatments vary depending on which you have so you need medical advice to determine which is the cause in your case and thus how best to help reduce it.
