I think I tore my rotator cuff. How do I know for sure?!

Question: 2 weeks ago I fell coming down the stairs and since then I have had the most horrible headaches and have not been able to lay on my right side due to the pain in my shoulder which travels up to my neck. I thought it was a repeat injury to my neck since I have degenerative disc disease in my cervical spine so I went to my chiropractor (he happens to also be a DO) he noticed some major cracking noises and major weakness (unable to resist him pushing on my arm). He diagnoised me with an extreme strain with some bruistois (sp?), but I am afraid that I may have done more than that as it isn't getting any better. How can I tell if it is a tear?

I tore mine....it hurts even when you don't use it....hurts really bad if you do. I just tried not to use it very much...and to lift my arms and move them gently for exercise when the pain started to get less.
The chiropractor said you have been seriously bruised? Or did he say you had bursitis? THAT can be a very painful thing but eventually it goes away.. Any black marks as if you bled internally?
It can take a few months before you feel right again. Just don't make any jerking or sudden moves. And don't lift anything with it.. Ask the doctor if you can apply something like ice or heat to help it....you need treatment. Also, take Ibuprofen to keep down inflammation. (take on tummy with food inside it) If you tore the ligament....it takes time to grow back again.
Try those rub on pain killers too. (pick with no odour) They do work. Rub it in really well.
My arm was so weak I couldn't even lift a coffee for a while. I'm pretty much ok now. Mine happened last winter. I now know I'm not Superwoman. I was trying to get a 3 drawer wide long dresser up a narrow staircase! I got so peeved I picked it up in the middle and carried it up each step. That's when I tore my shoulder. (fool)

i dont if its a tear. but you can get an MRI at the doctors. i hope it gets better. injuries like these suck. whenever you feel depressed or anything, just remember that it will come back to full strength. good luck.

It may be some other ligament, etc., but with the rotator cuff you can't lift your arm above the shoulder.

you should go to an orthopedic surgeon. He could maybe order an MRI and examine your shoulder. If you cannot lift your arm out to your side, thumb up and slowly lower it down, most likely you have torn your rotator cuff.

granite your chiro is a DO, i suggest never to go to a chiropractor for orthopaedic issues. go see an ortho surgeon and they'll work you up (clinical test/exams, xrays, MRIs, etc). may not be your cuff, could also be related to DDD, something called cervical radiculopathy. that fall my agitate that, and there's a nerve that goes from C5-C6 (brachioplexus nerve) down your arm. turn your head sideways and if you get pinching pain, that's what it is. either way, i suggest you follow up with an orthopaedic surgeon and get the work up so you know your options.

Go to a medical doctor and ask for the necessary test to check for this, it can be very serious. I have heard the surgery is nothing to laugh at either.

Ouch, I wouldn't want to be in your shoes. The safe bet would be go to the doctors and get an MRI or Cat Scan.

I'm sorry, but I can't help you much on this one...
