I think I might have tendinitis? help please.?!

Question: I play softball, and i am very good, so i practice hard. i recenetly made the high school softball team, and during practice about two months ago, we were doing lengthy throws, and i noticed a pain starting to occur. it wasnt bad at first, but after time, i have still been doing hard work on it and it has gradually gotten worse. and now it is to the point where i can't sleep. Icyhot does nothing, ibuprofen does nothing, and i don't know how much more i can standddd. its becoming so bad that i dont know what else to do. i've heard from some people that it could be tendinitis, and im really worried. its in my right elbow, and it originally started in my shoulder and now has worked to my arm. any help would be greatly appreciated!

have you're arm out in front of you, palm up (supinated), as if you're asking your mom for some money. if the pain is on the outside of the elbow (the same side as your thumb), it's what everyone's calling tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis). if it's on the inside of your elbow, it's called golfer's elbow (medial epicondylitis). since you're in high school, i dont suggest a cortisone (steroid) injection yet. calm it down by not using it as much for the next 6 weeks to let that tendon heal. you dont need a big elbow brace, you need a tennis elbow strap to compress that tendon that's bothering you (it's not exactly worn where the pain is, just distal to that). if you're still using your elbow a lot, then expect it to flare up. ice it. heating it when it's swollen will not help as blood will go to that area and make it worse. since ibuprofen doesn't help, other/stronger nsaids you can get from an orthopaedic surgeon. once you give it time to heal, you can stretch and work that tendon through physical therapy. either way, go see an orthopaedist and he'll discuss options with you.

Go to a doctor.

Stop and go see the doctor. He will probably send you to a specialists to run some tests.

Hopefully you have not damaged your shoulder/arm to the pt you need surgery.

ouch, i have the same problem. only mine came from repetative work in a factory. you will have to go to the doctor. he may send you to therapy and or have you use an elbow brace. it will take time to heal though. you can also ice the area, to help with swelling. good luck to you.

Soak your elbow in ice water. It may be uncomfortable, but it will reduce the swelling of your tendons which are pressing against your nerves. Also try to immobilize it as much as possible and elevate it.

Whoa, Whoa, Whoa...like everyone else has said...go see a doctor. You say it started in your shoulder and has traveled down your arm? Tendinitis typically doesn't do that. A pinched nerve however will do that. The harder the nerve is pinched the farther down the pain/numbness/tingling travels. The longer you leave the nerve pinched the larger the risk of damage. Keep in mind I'm not positive, but given your description of symptoms it is a good possibility and you need to see someone immediately to make sure. In the future, a good rule of thumb is that if OTC pain killers do nothing for it(not that if they do help then nothing is wrong) and especially if you can't sleep then something is wrong. Good luck and take care of that arm.

Add-on: Tendinitis of the elbow would be called tennis elbow. Symptoms of this would be pain radiating from forearm to wrist, pain when bumping or touching elbow, pain extending wrist, weak grip, and painful grip when doing something like shaking hands or turning doorknob. Similar symptoms except for your shoulder. If it started there I think the problem would have likely started there. Unless it's of course two seperate problems.

You need to rest your arm!!!! Try ice 15min 3 x day then moist heat x 10 mins then range of motion (move elbow etc..) take advil per label if you can..try this for 2wks if not getting better go to your provider.

(i'm a doc),from what you say,it doesn't look too good, not only should you completely stop playing BUT you should also go to a doctor as soon as possible,i'll say this, you probably have what is called a tennis elbow, the treatment being a lot of rest(un avoidable),steroids(the doc will help),pain killers(any, ibuprofen etc),warming your hand muscles from chest/shoulder to hand, massage, plus when it all gets ok in 1-2 months, you must modify your arm action and movement as well, the condition results of in-appropriate motion (stopping your hand to suddenly after a full fast motion),as in throwing a ball,so what i'm saying is that, throw in such a way that your'e arm e.g. continues smoothly in its motion without an abrupt stop.
