This sounds just like TMJ and I'm sorry to hear it :(

It's very painful and there's not much you can do (surgery is usually not called for because it's not generally effective.) There is a great book called "Taking Control of TMJ" that you can get from Amazon which explains everything and also, more importantly, gives you exercises to do to help.

Visit your dentist and ask him to make the diagnosis. He can also make you a night guard (flexible plastic mouthplate that fits over your top teeth to prevent you from grinding them at night.) My nightguard helps a LOT. It's important to take care of this ASAP because it will get worse.

Also try never to open your mouth all the way, especially when you're yawning. Avoid gum whenever possible, and anything else really chewy and/or sticky. Good luck!

visit the dentist---sounds like tmj and it requires treatment

have you stepped on anything Rusty?

Sounds like you may have rabies.

Go to the doctor

The problem is the Temporo Mandibular Joint, also known as TMJ...
Locking of the TMJ may be noticed simply by catching of the lower jaw as it opens. Sometimes, the person with a locked joint must move the jaw to one side or another in order to open wide. Or, a person might have to open until he hears and feels a loud pop, at which point the jaw actually unlocks.

There are doctors who specifically treat the problems you are having. Please check this website for treatment options. Good luck - I hope you get relief!

stay away from your BF for awhile,

Is your tetanus shot up to date? (the reason behind the rusty nail comment) You should really visit the Dr., as you may have tetanus, aka "lockjaw"

Good luck hun - I hope you get better soon! That has to be so uncomfortable

It sounds like you might have Temporo-Mandibular Joint (TMJ). I have it. I acts up in spurts with me.

Lock Jaw
Common Causes
Pericoronitis (inflammation of soft tissue around impacted third molar) is the most common cause of trismus.
Inflammation of muscles of mastication. It is a frequent sequel to surgical removal of mandibular third molars (lower wisdom teeth). The condition usually resolves on its own in 10-14 days, during which time eating and oral hygiene is compromised. The application of heat (e.g. heat bag extraorally, and warm salt water intraorally) may help reducing the severity and duration of the condition.
Peritonsillar abscess, a complication of tonsillitis which usually presents with sore throat, dysphagia, fever, and change in voice.
Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ)

[edit] Other Causes
Acute osteomyelitis
Ankylosis of the TMJ (fibrous or bony)
Condylar fracture or other trauma.
Gaucher disease which is caused by deficiency of the enzyme glucocerebrosidase.
Infection
Local anesthesia
Needle prick to the medial pterygoid muscle
Oral submucous fibrosis.
Radiation therapy to the head and neck.
Tetanus

[edit] Treatment
Treatment requires treating the underlying condition. Additionally, control of symptoms with pain medications (NSAIDs), muscle relaxants, and warm compresses may be used.
