Question: So I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago, and I went to the podiatrist a week ago, and he said it was sprained and gave me an ankle brace. He said not to use my crutches as much. So I limp severly whenevr I try to walk. Sometimes I cry when I walk. It hasnt improved at al, and actually, it got a litle worse. I have iced it and soaked it and it dont work. Iyt occasionally swells. I use the crutches today because I couldnt walk. Im going back to the podiatirst next week. And its not just my ankle, its also my heel and most of my foot. It hurts very badly to move it. he podiaris is going to take another x ray, but the last one came back negative. But I think they may have rushed. The last time they took the x ray but they didnt have anyone to read it, so they sent it somewhere to get read. They called in only 1 hour and said they didnt see anything. But I think they might have rushed and not looked at it thoroughly.

Should I get a cast? (Plz dont drag on, just tell me yes or no and why.)

Im with everyone else on the second opinion and seeing an orthopedist! ... Fractures don't always show an initial fracture, especially if they are obtained the same day of injury. It is possible that you do have a fracture or an avulsion (a small chip of bone torn away with the tendon) Repeat x-rays can determine this. Use your crutches as necessary .... if it hurts to weightbear on the ankle.

Get a second opinion from an orthopedic surgeon.

No, you shouldn't get a cast. Walking on a foot that you have been babying is going to make it hurt worse. Thus the reason there is physical therapy. Radiologist can look at an x-ray in a matter of minutes and see what is broken or not. I suggest that you ask about some physical therapy and do what your podiatrist says.

If you don't feel comfortable with what your Dr. is saying, then get a second opinion ~

You can't just put a cast on yourself, and a Dr. will want a good reason to do so ~

Probably don't need a cast, but if it is getting worse you may need a boot. I had this problem they told me to take it easy and take ibuprofen (3 tabs) every 4 hours. My foot did get better after a few weeks of no running, exercise, etc. It took almost a year before it stayed calm without sometimes needing ibuprofen rounds again. The podiatrist said if it had been any worse they would have put me in a boot to imobilize the muscles of the ankle so they could heal.

I second the orthopedic surgeon

second opinions are always GOOD! :-)

i agree, orthopedic surgeon. They will take good xrays and make sure its not broken. You shouldn't need a cast if its not broken. Sometimes they prescribe a boot for severe sprains. You can take this on and off, unlike a cast. It shouldn't be getting worse. Are you walking on it a lot. Try and rest it as much as possible. Keep it elevated.

u should try to see an orthopeadist, or ask to have an MRI done...

if ur ankle is still hurting and causing u to limp while walking then continue with the crutches(no need to cause additional strain, and possible reinjure it)

get a second opinion

I think you should go to an orthopedist instead of a podiatrist. I can't say if you need a cast. I would not recommend getting a cast without a proper diagnosis.

I would question a doctor that is unable to interpret x-rays without the help of a radiologist.
