It would probably be best to go to a reputable massage therapist for help, but your idea of stabbing the muscle does have some merit although you would not want to do it with a sharp object! You could do some pressure point therapy on knots or better yet, have someone else do it for you as it would be hard to reach your own back. If you can find someone to do it for you, ask them to feel around your back for the knots, then press down slowly with a knuckle for 10-12 seconds before slowly releasing. Sometimes they might feel a knot release beneath their hand. You could also try doing this yourself with something like a tennis ball in a tube sock if you can't find someone to do it for you. Put the ball in the sock and hold the open end, moving it until you find a likely spot, then lean back into a wall to apply pressure.
Either of those options will probably provide you with a bit of relief, but even more important might be to discover what the cause of the pain is and deal with that. Is it stress? Try some relaxation techniques and stretching. Is it a certain repetative motion you do, such as for work? Try to find alternative ways to move or at least be aware of your muscles tensing up during that activity and try to relax them often. Also, you could try some counter activities. For example, if you work in front of your body a lot, such as typing on a computer, your chest muscles tend to get tight (which usually causes back pain), so try stretching them by doing some light flyes at the gym (or at home) or stretching in a doorway by placing one arm on either side of the door and then leaning forward through the door until you feel a pleasant stretch.
Good luck, I hope you feel better soon!

Come on over and I will show you. Bring a bottle of red wine, I have the candles.
