How do you reduce swelling.?!


Question: long story short i dislocated my kneecap yesterday, and i tore all the ligaments and tendons in my knee. so its about 3 times the size my normal knee is. i know that if i get the swelling to go down the long term effects wont be as bad, and the pain now will be less. but im not sure how to reduce the swelling..its in a brace so i cant really ice it or whatever..

I have fracture and torn my ligament in my ankle and i have always had knee problems. What works for me is RICE
R- Rest
I- ice
C- compress
E- Elevate

cold water, the icy hot bad thing...

Use a cold pack or frozen bag of veggies and place it over the brace. That's the best way to reduce swelling. Remember to use it for 20 mins on and 40 mins off. Suffice to say, I hope you'll see a doctor to have that knee checked out.

Try taking some advil, i believe it'll help with the pain and reduce swelling...but seriously, go to a doctor or something, they have stuff

Elevation(like with a pillow) but above ur head(meaning u lay flat but put the leg on a pillow)

Elevate your leg. Put a pillow or pillows under your leg.

Frozen peas. You can keep refreezing them, they are cheap and the mold nicely. Hopefully you can use them with the brace.
15 min on 15 min off

Use the R I C E method: Rest, ice, compression and elevation.

Also, the doctor can prescribe anti-inflammatory meds.

I'm assuming you've seen a dr..
There is no replacement for ice or cold therapy.
Get the blue ice packs/ you freeze em then wrap in thin towel and put on your leg. Pack around the brace if you have to. You can also go to a medical supply store and rent a thing that has an igloo cooler to it for the ice and water, and pumps it thru to a thin pad so you can leave it on for 30 minutes at a time.. 30 minutes on and 30 off.
Take ibprophen too to help reduce swelling.
Keep the leg elevated - at least level with the rest of your body (if your sitting).
Stay off of it.

cold packs and elevate the affected area... that the best simple way to do it. Also anti inflammatory.

umm, to be brutally honest with you, if the ligaments and tendons are torn, it needs surgery. did you get an MRI to confirm the severity of the injury? anyway, about swelling in general (since we dont know the severity), since it's in a brace, you can still try to ice around it. if you can ice, don't directly place the ice pack on to the skin as you can get frost-bite symptoms. if you can't ice, keep it elevated as much as possible. if you're on the couch, take up the whole space by laying your leg over the couch with pillows to prop it up. make sure you dont try to sit up while doing this as this can bother your hip flexors (may or may not, see what's comfortable for you). keep it compressed with an ace wrap (elastic wrap) if you can fit it underneath the brace. stay off of it for a while. keeping your leg down will send fluid that way. over-the-counter anti-inflammatories such as ibuprofen/motrin or aleve can help as well (take as directed). i hope you saw or plan on seeing an orthopaedic surgeon soon.

The best way to reduce the swelling is to elevate above heart level , i.e. laying on the couch with your foot propped on pillows ... sitting forms a "kink" in the "hose" at the hip and makes it harder to reduce the fluid in the extremity ...
