I am 6 days post-op from ACL reconstruction surgery and having horrible pain sti!

Question: Today I went from 7am till 7pm w/out pain meds b/c I'm currently taking percocet 7.5/325mg and when I do not eat w/ them they make me sick to my stomach. I didnt have anyone at home with me today and didnt have anything to eat that didnt require cooking so I didnt take my pain meds. I was in horrible pain to the point that I was crying. Then I couldnt stop crying. I don't know if it was the fact that I was alone for the 1st time since surgery and felt lonely and bored and depressed or if it was that I hadnt taken any pain meds in 12hrs. My mom thinks that it was because i was going through withdrawl from pain meds since i have been on them for 2mths. I took two of my percocets after eating some chili that my uncle brought to me and I felt better. I stopped crying and didnt feel so depressed anymore. I'm still hurting some but it isnt bad if I don't get up and try to walk. Has anyone had this problem before? Does anyone have any advice on pain management for post-op surgery?

I am exactly 4 weeks out of acl reconstruction surgery. At times I still have extreme pain, usually after therapy and being on my leg for extended periods of time. About a week out of surgery I still had horrible pain and tried to not take the percocet and the pain got so bad that percocet could not catch up to pain. After week 2 the doctor and I spoke and I told him I did not feel I need the percocet but did need something. Now I take Vicodin for the pain probably about 4 pills a day. Hang in there it does get better day by day. Being home for the first time is very stressful and scary.
The doctor also has me taking celebrex once a day which has lessened the pain and swelling alot.
Good luck to you. I hope your recovery goes well. I been crying everyday for the last week, I realize its fear because I return to work on Monday for the first time since surgery. I am afraid of walking around and hurting my knee again. I am now using a cane instead of crutches.
Also what helped along with the celebrex and vicodin was ice.
Ice has become my best friend.
I hope I helped you a bit. If you have any questions I would be happy to try to answer from my experience or if you feel lonely just email me. le555_2003@yahoo.com.

yep...sounds like withdrawal...talk to the physician and get something better...and keep your support system with you to monitor your behavior...don't try to be superhuman...It's a traumatic experience@!

I am sorry your in pain,
I had the same surgery in 2000, My husband travels for work and I got mad at the nurse , so I called a friend to come get me left the hospital in a snow storm . They did send me home with med's but living 30 miles from town and friends I was screwed! Lot's of warm showers . cover the wound with a bag until you can get it wet. also deep breathing, the more I walked around the more I could push through the break through pain. Keep taking the pill's or cut them in half . even with a piece of bread. good luck
