Have you ever..??!

Question: Have you ever went in for surgery that you are "put under" for? Have you ever wondered what the docs are talking about when you are under? Do they listen to music that they like when you are "under"? Please tell me. I am schedualed for a surgery in a week. I have seen a program on TV that shows the docs ordering food from one of thier coworkers. Any input would be good. Thank you.

I worked in Theatre for almost 6 years.
Some Surgeons listen to music and some even sing (badly usually) to their faviourite music. It has to be their faviourite as it helps them relax and focus. They can't listen to something they don't like.
99% chat about their weekends, golf games, TV programs, etc. And tell the most stupid jokes!
If they didn't do this and were silent the whole time they would get very bored very quick. Remember that your's is not the only surgery they are doing in a day and can spend half a day in Theatre, so they need to be able to do 'relax' during their day.

I am sure that they ran this doco JUST BECAUSE it was unprofessional and unusual. All the Doc's I have worked with and Nursing staff are very professional and ordering food and talking about body parts is NOT TOLERATED.

If you are having a general aneathestic (GA) then you will be unconscious and have no idea what they are doing during the surgery. Including any discussions going on or music being played.

If it is a local aneathestic then you will be aware of what is going on around you. They will only numb the area they need to.
Sometimes they will give you sedation with a local which means you will doze off during surgery and usually have no recollection of what's happened at all.

I am having major surgery myself in 2 weeks, followed by another week in hospital, because I know the people who are looking after me in Theatre, although they remain professional, they do make jokes about my bare bum getting flashed and such BUT if I say anything about finding it offensive THEY WILL IMMEDIANTLY STOP.

If you are having the local and are aware and at any time find ANYTHING they are doing offensive or scary SAY SO. REMEMBER they are their for you and to look after you and keep you calm and reassured.

I am happy to answer any other questions you have.

Each time, they were very professional. The nursing staff were kind and comforting, and the surgeon very businesslike.

Don't worry, everything will be fine. I am sure the majority of medical staff do their jobs well and efficiently.

If you have any worries talk with the nursing staff when you get to the hospital.

All the very best.

xx

it depends on the team...most do play music and joke, but it's a method of "coping" with the pressure of the job, not meant to be disrespectful.
Good luck on your surgery.

they just listen to Radio 2 and laugh at your bits

I'm sure that in real life they don't do that...
Most medical practitioners spend so many years (approx. 12) studying to get their med licence, I'm sure they wouldn't jepordize it by doing something unsanitary.
I hope everything goes well for you.
Good luck, and don't worry, I'm sure everything will be fine!

You will be fine - and you will be under so you will not be bothered by it. But think about it - it was only on the TV because it was unusual - they wouldn
