Applying ice or a cold pack, wrapped in cloth, for 5 or 10 minutes at a time, will help ease discomfort and may bring down the swelling. For the most part, though, you just need to give it time; it poses no danger.

Applying something cold helps. Wrap a bag of frozen peas in a clean dish towel and apply to the lump for a brief period. (Don't freeze the kid's skin!)

This may not help nearly as much several days after the injury, but it won't do any harm and may ease any hurt.

While you're thinking of it, put one cup of uncooked rice in a sandwich bag and seal it securely. Put it in the freezer. You now have a cold pack that can shape itself to any injury--and a dinner-carbs back-up.

Gently ice it. A bag of frozen peas or other small, frozen veggies works well for this. It surrounds the tender bump without applying a lot of pressure.

You should gently rub the knot after you apply some warm compress. Once the bump goes down, place a cold cloth over it.

Hope he feels better soon!
