I had my left foot done like 11 years ago, & would have the other done in a heartbeat if I needed to. Yes, it's pretty permanent if your have a good surgeon. They take the joint apart, slice the protruding part off, put in a pin to keep things in place & stitch you up. For me, the 1st night was tough--lots of pain, even w/pain pills, but by morning, I was good w/advil. When things were healed, they had me manually bend the joint forward & backward almost to the point to pain 10 times each for 5-8 times a day. The doc said I had better range of motion in that joint than most people who haven't even had the surgery! Some people have both feet done at the same time, but I don't think its a great idea personally. Good luck, & remember it isn't as bad as you think! I had mine done with local anesthetic so I could watch--it was sooo interesting!!--& then I drove home.

The protruding bone is cut repositioned and stabilized, so the operation can be considered permanent.

My mom had 2 major foot surgeries, hers were a mess. SHe had bunions, bones removed, and also some plastic joints put in. Her feet are fine now, but she has really committed to proper fitting shoes.

One thing my mom did, was she walked on her feet right from the beginning. Out of surgery, she was bent over and hobbling around on her heels hold her toes up so they didn't get touched, and then she just walked everywhere in soft knit slippers. Because of the increased blood flow, she made 3 1/2 months healing progress in 1 month. She said it was very painful, but there was no way she was going to use a bed pan! And her surgeries were 30 yrs ago, so it was permanent for her

I've had bunion surgery and it is permanent. It was the best thing I have ever done and I would do it all over again.

permanent. while everything is not a gaurantee, it works well for many. google up "distal chevron bunionectomy" and you can read up on the procedure, success rates, etc. but the people i see in clinic all do well. good luck to ya.

oh, another thing, don't see a podiatrist (DPMs). stands for dummies practicing medicine. go see a foot & ankle specialist in an orthopaedic clinic. just another suggestion.
