Poison is a pretty slow death. Rat poison typically causes an animals inner cavities to slowly fill with blood. I wouldn't reccomend poison at all, i mean house rats that are in your attic/basement are obnoxious pests and can definitely be dirty, but they are the same species that some people keep as pets, and have the same abilities to feel pain as peoples pet rats do even if they are not domesticated, so i think that poisoning them is a little extreme. There are many humane traps you can buy which catch the rats and then you can release them away from your house, where you do not have to handle the rats or even really look at them. You do have to check those fairly often however or they can starve to death inside which is just as bad. For people who would still prefer to kill the rats but don't want them to suffer, any large rat traps that break the neck tend to be the most humane. Poison is also dangerous because children and other animals can get into it, and also the animals die hidden inside your walls, attic, basement etc where you can't get to them and your house will eventually start to smell from their little corpses. Gross, but true.

slow and painfull

I think it depends on the poison, but it usually is very painful for the rat. Most of the poisons don't work immediatly, but slowly dry them out so they don't start rotting after they've died. It's sad to say, but it's a slow and painful death.

about ten min but then it goes num varies for diffrent poisions

Yeah its a lot of pain, basically it leaches out all of the fluid from their blood vessels into their body. It sucks. Figure something else out to get rid of mice.

if your planning on killing rats ur a b.itch!

it obviously depends on the poison and the condition of the rat

...but please tell me you're not going to try to poison a rat just for the hell of it?

Rat poison is very painful. Just as if you had ingested poison.

Organs begin to shut down. You're still able to feel.
The last thing to go is the CNS, when you stop feeling.
Then your heart goes and it's over.
It's.. slow.
