Ear Piercing?!

Question: In second grade, I got my ears pierced at Claire's. My ears are sensitive, so the lady told my mom not to change earrings until after six months. In fourth grade I changed earrings. It wasn't the first time, and the ones that I wore were 14k gold. I had borrowed them from a friend.

That night, my left ear swelled up and got a blister-like thing on it. My mom took out the left earring, and the next day, the blister-thing popped by itself and my piercing closed up.

Last year, in seventh grade, my mom took me to Claire's and asked them if it was safe to get my ear re-pierced. The lady said that I was probably better off getting it done professionally and to wait a while longer.

Now, my mom wants me to get it pierced sometime soon so that I can wear earrings at eighth grade graduation.

Can anybody tell me if it's safe for me to get it re-pierced without having a high risk of infection? And what are some proffesional places to get piercings around West San Jose?

Thanks :]]

Id say it would be safe now. The reason that your ear swelled up may be for a few reasons. Firstly, you may have an allergy to gold. Because the ears can be sensitive this may have caused them to swell up. Secondly, you say you borrowed them from a friend? I wouldnt recommend that. Your friend may have had dirt on the earings, so when you put them in, all that dirt went into your ear hole. Whenever you put a new pair of earings in you should always clean them with an alcohol wipe. Alternativly you can buy some steralising spray from professional tattooists and peircers. It shouldnt cost that much, but basically it will steralise any jewellery so that you wont get infections. I dont think the fact that your ear swelled up had anything to do with the time period, because 6 months is the recommended time, so after 2 years you should have been right. Whenever a peircing gets infected, you shouldnt remove the jewellery until the infection clears up because you can be left with some nasty scarring. To clean the peircing daily, use a salt water wash and clean around the earing and in the hole using a cue tip. Do this twice a day when you first get the peircing done. Your ears may also just be very sensitive as i know mine are. I can only wear silver sleepers in my second holes to stop them getting infected. I would go get them peirced but not at claires. Get them done at a professional palour who will help you look after them after they are done.

You'll want to go to a piercing studio- they can tell you what kind of metal will work best for your earrings.
They will also use the proper instruments for piercing. At a place like Claire's, they use a piercing gun, which basically forces the earring through the ear, causing a lot of trauma to the tissue.
At a professional piercing studio, they use a needle which cleanly pierces the skin, doing less damage. They will also have very high quality earrings to use on sensitive skin.
Unfortunately, I am not familiar with San Jose, so I cannot recommend a good studio. You may want to ask around- if you know of anyone with a lot of piercings, ask them where they got theirs done.
Before you get anything pierced, ask to see the studio's autoclave as well as needles. If the needles are not individually packaged, one-time-use needles and they do not have an autoclave (this is used to sterilize the tools they use more than once) chances are, this is not a clean studio.
As long as you go to a high-quality, clean establishment that uses single-use needles to pierce, it should be safe.

well you don't get pierced by piercing guns they are the worst. i would advise you to go to piercing parlor. since is cleaner than piercing guns and don't use butterfly clips when getting your ears pierced your ears can get swollen and go into the groves of the piercing and also when you use a gun it may clamp the butterfly backing too far into the ear and you cannot autoclave the gun too so..... yeaa go find a parlor but if you want to find out how safe they are check to see maintenance records of their autoclaves which sterilizes their needles. make sure the place is clean if not leave don't get pressured into getting pierced where you are not conformable .
