As a RN working on a trauma response team, I once was called to an accident scene on a farming area. A farm laborer was caugh in a combine up to his chest. His lower torso was shredded like hamburger. After starting multiple IVs in his arms, stabilizing him and calling for back up, they used a welding torch to cut the combine up into pieces so that we could remove this man. It took about an hour or so...but he made it! His lower legs were amputated and his lower torso were shredded. Want more medical stories?

When i was little i snuck out of the house at night because i missed my family. When i got to my Gramma's house I snuck in through my brothers window, and as i opened it up, he hit me with a baseball bat. He apparently thought some one was trying to break in. How IRONIC?

none, never broke a bone in my body, but have been free of cancer for 7 almost 8 years

well, besides a broken ?... [sigh]...
When I was about 5, I tripped over the bathroom mat and my mouth was open, so when I fell, my teeth hit the bottom of the porcelin toilet, and they got jammed into my gums. My mom had to rush my to the doctor/dentist and when they pulled them back down, they were black. My new 2 front teeth were crooked, so I had to get braces.

i was in bumper cars once and someone hit us while i was trying to put my belt on. i flew out of the front of the car, landed on the floor, and i got hit by several bumper cars before the power was switched off

i had a broken collar bone and 4 fractured ribs

and i was only 9

never been on one since!

A few years ago (2005) I went to Tonga in the South Pacific to snorkle with humpback whales. During the trip I was bitten by a spider on my right foot. The bite didn't seem that bad, so a day went by before it got really bad and my entire foot was swollen 4x its size.

I also developed a fever and chills. We found a small non-profit clinic (no real hospitals in Tonga) where there were some Western trained doctors. They were able to calm down the fever and other symptoms and contained the bacteria that was spreading up my leg.

However, they did not have enough antibiotics to actually kill it. So, I had to travel back home in a wheelchair (could not walk) and then went staight to the emergency room as soon as we landed back in the US. Travelling 18 hours with this issue was pure hell.

It took exactly three months of antibiotic drips into my veins (2x a day) to finally make the bacteria die and the swelling to come back down. They said it was an extremely resistant bacteria that was unique to the South Pacific region. It wasn't the spider bite that made it this bad, but a bacteria that got in the actual bite.

The place on my foot that had the bite still has a scar on it. I survived this ordeal, but if it wouldn't have been for that clinic in Tonga - I may not have made it.

This experience did not deter me from travel. I still go and do things in remote areas, but I wear better shoes and always take antibiotics with me as a precaution.
