Ankle ligament damage?!

Question: How long does this take to recover/heal?

My partner has badly sprained his ankle - it is extremely swollen and completely black with bruising.

He is on crutches and has been signed off work for 3 weeks. He is also in a lot of pain.

The dr's and hospital have been very cagey about recovery time and have given us little idea when he should be able to walk or drive again.

Anybody any advice - it would be useful to have some idea how long this could go on for?!!!

Thank you!

Ankles are a very complex joint, and can take a fairly long time to heal. They are not like the normal knee or elbow where two/three bones come together. There are multiple ligaments, multiple bone structures, and have wide ranging areas they affect. Since they are at an extreme periphreal point, swelling and darkening are common as it takes more pressure to remove the swelling.

The easy answer is each ankle and person are different. A bad sprain in an ankle can hinder many activities for up to 6-8 weeks or more in certain cases. If they are giving him 3 weeks off of work for it I would say it will be atleast 3 weeks before he is off of crutches and/or able to drive using that ankle.
