First things first - don't look at it. Either take a deep breath in or blow a deep breath out as they're poking you. I think I usually take the breath in. Closing your eyes might help. I personally like to know when they're about to do it - so I make sure they tell me. But if you think a surprise would be better - go with that. As for braces - I didn't get any shots with them. You'll be fine on both counts :-)

no numbing when they put on the braces.

As far as the blood being drawn......make a tight fist and look away. It will be over before you know it.

Try not to look down at the needle when they're putting it in you. Look over to the side or at the ceiling until they take it out. Just be relaxed, it'll be over in no time!

And no, they don't numb you for braces.

Braces...most likely no needles. My daughter just had full upper and lower braces and never had a shot. Now, for the needles...tell the person drawing the blood that you are afraid and would like to lay down while they take your blood. This will prevent you from falling if you pass out while they are drawing the blood. While they are preparing your arm for the blood draw I would suggest that you find something in the room to focus on, a picture or an object away from your arm. Deep, slow breathing is important. In your nose, out your mouth. The actual 'shot' does not hurt...just a pinch really. Just remember to breathe!!!
